We are looking for someone who is genuine and passionate about using their own lived experience of mental health challenges to support people with their mental health recovery journey.
The position is 3 days per week on a contract until June 30th 2027, on a SCHADS Award Level 2 (Level 3 if the person holds relevant experience).
Peer Work at MIFWA:
A Peer Worker is a role where a person with lived experience applies their life learnings to support others. Peer workers inspire hope and confidence,
Peer workers are people who identify as having lived experience and who are employed in designated roles to use this lived experience, where appropriate, to build empathy and rapport and engage in mutual support.
In the context of this role, lived experience refers to a person having either:
- a profound life-changing mental health challenge or distress; and/or
- issues with alcohol and other drug and/or life challenges, or life-changing experiences
- These challenges have led to a current life direction and concept of self and have profoundly impacted the persons' life/world view.
Your role will help us make a difference by: Your role will make use of your own lived experience of mental health issues and personal recovery, to provide mentoring and support to people returning home after a hospital admission. The primary aim of our Hospital to Home program is to optimise the transition home following a hospital stay, connect people with the supports they need to stay safe and well, and to reduce feelings of distress and readmission to hospital.
Does this sound like you:
- You have a current WA Driver’s licence
- You have personal lived experience of mental health issues and bring a unique insight of the challenges, value and wisdom of the lived experience perspective
- You can understand how to appropriately use your lived experience of mental health issues to mentor and support people
- You self-reflect and continuously review your work practices
- You have an understanding of mental health system and issues
- You are a people person, and can engage with a variety of people (even when someone is considered hard to get to know or having a bad day)
- You follow through and take responsibility for your actions.
- You have great communication skills
