Job Description
At Hullbot we're on a mission to decarbonise the global maritime industry.
We're delivering autonomous underwater robots that inspect and clean ship hulls.
Hullbot's systems are actively deployed in locations around the world, maintaining hulls free of biofouling, reducing fuel use and cutting emissions.
United by a shared ambition to create environmental impact on a global scale, we move rapid and solve complex technical challenges together.
If you want to work on real robotic solutions with measurable impact, solving one of the world's biggest environmental challenges, Hullbot is the place to do it.
The Role
We're looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who thrives in the creative phase of product development.
This is not a maintenance or incremental‐optimisation role.
You'll be embedded in our R&D; team, where constraints are evolving, ideas are fluid, and creativity matters just as much as precision.
You'll sketch, ideate, prototype, and translate ambiguous ideas into tangible mechanical systems with a cross functional team.
You'll help shape products before they're fully defined — and then turn them into real, manufacturable hardware.
What You'll Do
Quickly communicate design intent through sketches, CAD models and prototypes
Translate rough concepts into detailed 3D CAD design for mechanisms, structures, and modular robotic assemblies,
Build and iterate rapid prototypes (in-house and with vendors)
Work closely with electrical, software, and systems engineers to develop integrated solutions
Evaluate trade‐offs between performance, cost, manufacturability, and reliability
Participate in design reviews and contribute to shaping product architecture
What We're Looking For
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design or similar
Extensive hands‐on mechanical design experience (R&D; or Product Development preferred)
Strong 3D CAD skills (Onshape, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, NX, or similar)
Ability to move fluidly from hand sketches to prototype, building and testing physical prototypes, then production‐ready CAD
Experience designing mechanisms, linkages, enclosures, and structural components, and integrating these with electro‐mechanical systems
Ability to manage complex CAD assemblies of modular sub‐systems, informed by assembly skeletons
You'll Thrive Here If You...
Enjoy open‐ended problems more than tightly constrained ones, and are comfortable with evolving constraints
Get energy from early‐stage ideation, whiteboard sessions, fast team iteration, rather than perfecting v1 in isolation
Are comfortable experimenting and building to learn
Think visually and mechanically, with a strong intuition for geometry, tolerances, materials, and manufacturing processes
Care about elegant, thoughtful design, not just functional design
Bonus Experience
Robotics or electromechanical systems
Rapid prototyping (3D printing, CNC, sheet metal, composites)
Designing for manufacturing processes (Injection Moulding, Vacuum Casting, CNC Machining, Casting, Forming, Encapsulation)
Design for harsh or outdoor environments including maritime
Mechanism simulation and/or FEA
Why Hullbot?
See your work be brought to life, deployed solving real world problems
Take high ownership over product direction in a small tight‐knit team
Fast iteration cycles and hands‐on prototyping in a collaborative R&D; environment
Opportunities for rapid learning and personal development
