Research Assistant – Autoimmune Gene Therapeutics
The Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR) – Westmead NSW
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Research Assistant to join the Autoimmune Gene Therapeutics Group within the Centre for Immunology and Allergy Research. You will work as part of a collaborative research team developing next-generation gene therapies for autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. A major focus of the laboratory is understanding and overcoming immune responses to gene therapies, with the goal of improving their effectiveness and clinical application. The successful applicant will work closely with postdoctoral scientists and gain exposure to all stages of translational research, from laboratory discovery through to clinical research.
Key responsibilities
Contributing to research projects investigating gene therapies for autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases
Performing laboratory experiments and assisting with the optimisation and validation of experimental assays
Maintaining mammalian cell cultures and supporting routine laboratory procedures
Collecting, processing and storing clinical and pre-clinical biological samples
Generating, recording and analysing experimental data
Maintaining accurate laboratory records, databases and documentation
Preparing reagents and helping manage laboratory resources and equipment
Supporting laboratory quality, biosafety and WHS procedures
Participating in laboratory meetings, seminars and scientific discussions
Working collaboratively with researchers, clinicians, students and external collaborators
About you
A Bachelor of Science with Honours, or equivalent research experience, in a relevant biomedical discipline
Research experience in molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, genetics or a related discipline




Experience working in a laboratory research workplace through Honours, vacation scholarship, employment or equivalent research training
A genuine enthusiasm for scientific discovery and curiosity-driven learning
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality research
Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
The ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a collaborative team
A proactive approach to solving problems and dealing with experimental challenges
Good written and verbal communication skills
An understanding of safe laboratory practices, research integrity and accurate scientific record keeping
