You want to lead data engineering that actually matters — shaping architecture, guiding teams, and sitting at the table when strategy gets set. This is that role.
THE ROLE
Our client is a technology consultancy delivering data and analytics transformation across a diverse customer base. They're looking for a Senior Consultant - Data Engineering to take technical ownership of their data practice — from pipeline design to pre-sales pursuits. Based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, this is a permanent, full-time opportunity where no two weeks look the same. You'll work hands-on with Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, Delta Lake and Power BI while also mentoring engineers, setting team standards, and helping win new work.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
Design and build pipelines and lakehouse architectures on Azure and Databricks that customers genuinely depend on
Transform messy source data into well-modelled Power BI reporting that drives real decisions
Own technical design on engagements and hold the quality line on everything shipped
Run discovery sessions and workshops directly with customers, turning business questions into data solutions
Build data quality, testing, observability and governance in from the start
Lead pre-sales pursuits alongside directors — shaping solutions, sizing effort and presenting technical responses
Mentor engineers and develop the standards and reusable patterns that lift the whole team
Manage two or three concurrent engagements,
keeping variety high and the work interesting
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
8+ years of data engineering experience, with a consulting or professional services background
Strong SQL and Python with the judgement to favour easy over clever
Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Microsoft Fabric and Azure Data Lake Storage
Solid Databricks and Apache Spark experience, including Delta Lake and layered architectures
Data modelling depth across dimensional and lakehouse patterns
Power BI skills spanning semantic modelling, DAX and report design
Source control, CI/CD and environment management, ideally via Azure DevOps
A track record in pre-sales: solution shaping, effort estimation and technical proposal writing
Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and building capability around you
Full working rights in Australia and willingness to complete a national police check
NICE TO HAVE
Microsoft certification such as DP-203 or DP-600, or a Databricks certification
Experience with dbt or similar transformation frameworks
Exposure to Azure AI Foundry, retrieval-augmented generation or responsible AI practice
Experience delivering into government or regulated environments
Broader Microsoft digital transformation experience
