The Role
The EL 1 Aviation Cyber Specialist is a key member of the Fleet Air Arm’s cyber governance and management capability, providing specialist advice on the Cyberworthiness and security of Naval Aviation systems. The role is responsible for leading aviation focused cyber risk assessments, vulnerability analysis, and assurance activities in accordance with Defence policies.
The position oversees the coordination of Aviation ICT security assessments, penetration testing, and incident response activities across aviation platforms, including crewed and uncrewed systems. It provides authoritative advice to senior stakeholders on emerging cyber threats, system vulnerabilities and risk mitigation strategies.
In collaboration with Defence aviation, intelligence and cyber organisations, the role requires strong stakeholder engagement, technical leadership and the ability to translate complex cyber risks into operational impacts to support capability delivery and aviation safety outcomes.
About our Team
The Aviation Cyber capability within Headquarters Fleet Air Arm (HQFAA) provides specialist oversight of cyber security and Cyberworthiness across Naval Aviation systems. As a small, newly established team, it aims to deliver focused and agile support to this evolving capability area. Based at HMAS Albatross, the team works closely with operations, intelligence and engineering stakeholders to ensure the safe, secure and resilient operation of aviation capability.
The team supports Navy and wider Defence outcomes by enabling informed risk based decision-making and ensuring compliance with aviation safety and cyber security requirements. This includes collaboration with squadrons, the Naval Aviation Systems Program Office, Joint Cyber Group, and industry partners, including OEMs.
Through strong stakeholder engagement and technical expertise, the team contributes to maintaining aviation capability in an increasingly contested and complex cyber setting.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is a highly capable cyber professional with experience in aviation, Defence, or complex technical environments. They will demonstrate strong analytical skills, sound judgement and the ability to rapidly assimilate into the Fleet Air Arm safety culture.
The candidate will possess excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence senior leaders and collaborate across diverse organisations including operations, intelligence, and engineering and cyber domains. They will be comfortable working in ambiguous environments and able to translate complex technical issues into clear, actionable advice.
A strong understanding of aviation safety culture, coupled with resilience, initiative and professionalism, will enable the candidate to contribute effectively to safeguarding Naval Aviation capability in a contested cyber environment.
