Established in 1906 the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is not only Australia’s oldest orchestra, but one of the country’s most forward-looking major arts institutions. It currently engages over 2.5 million people through live and recorded broadcasts and performs live to more than 300,000 people annually, in concerts ranging from performances at its home, Hamer Hall at Arts Centre Melbourne, to its annual free concerts at Melbourne’s largest outdoor venue, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The MSO presents innovative and engaging programs to audiences of all ages across Victoria through its outreach, education, and community initiatives.
About the role
Reporting to the Production Lead/s, the Production Assistant supports the delivery of the production and technical requirements of company activities, including, but not limited to, stage setups and changes, bump in/out, equipment transport, touring, and other duties as reasonably required.
The role also provides casual Production Assistants with opportunities to build practical skills and industry knowledge, supporting their development and progression within live production and the broader performing arts industry.
What the day to day will look like
Assisting with the setup and pack down of the orchestra, including manual handling and lifting, using appropriate equipment and support where required
Support onstage operations during performances and events, including stage changes as required
Assist with the safe transport and movement of MSO equipment in coordination with freight and logistics providers
Provide administrative and operational support to the Production and Operations teams, and other areas of the organisation as required
Contribute to a safe working environment by identifying, reporting and helping to minimise Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S;) risks
Support front-of-house activities and audience-facing operations as required
Current valid Victorian WorkingWithChildren Check (WWCC)
Currentvalid driverlicence,includingexperience drivingmanual vehicles
Willingness totake initiative, communicate effectivelyandask questions
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, following directions and managing time effectively.
Ability to work across varied venues and locations throughout Melbourne and Victoria.
Ability to work rostered shifts at various times and days, including early mornings, weekends and nights
Demonstrated willingness to develop skills and knowledge within orchestral and live production.
