Our client is a leading Australian renewable energy developer, owner and operator with a diversified portfolio spanning hydro, solar, wind and battery energy storage.
With an established and fully integrated retail energy business, the organisation operates across both generation and retail, supplying electricity directly to commercial, industrial and residential customers. This vertically integrated model creates a genuinely diverse legal environment, with exposure extending beyond traditional energy projects into retail regulation, customer operations, commercial contracting and broader regulatory compliance.
As the business continues to grow its retail offering, an opportunity has arisen for a Legal Counsel to join its Melbourne-based legal team and play an important role supporting its retail energy operations.
The Role
Sitting within the retail function, this is a broad commercial and regulatory position with a particular focus on retail energy regulation and compliance.
You will work closely with legal, regulatory, commercial and operational stakeholders, providing practical advice across the full customer lifecycle and helping the business navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment.
The role offers the opportunity to develop genuine depth in Australian retail energy regulation while maintaining exposure to broader commercial legal matters. You will be involved in both day-to-day advisory work and more strategic regulatory and compliance initiatives, with the opportunity to take increasing ownership as your experience develops.
Key areas of exposure will include:
- Advising on retail energy regulation and compliance, including obligations applying to energy retailers and their interactions with customers
- Monitoring regulatory developments and helping the business understand and implement changes to its obligations
- Drafting,
reviewing and negotiating a broad range of commercial, procurement and supplier agreements
- Advising commercial and operational teams on contractual interpretation, risk allocation and compliance obligations
- Supporting the business in relation to regulatory investigations, information requests, consultations and enforcement matters
- Assisting with interactions and submissions involving relevant energy regulators and industry bodies
- Supporting the continued development and implementation of compliance frameworks, policies, procedures and regulatory reporting
- Working with stakeholders across the retail business to identify and manage emerging legal and regulatory risks
- Assisting with disputes and other legal matters arising from the organisation's retail operations
- Contributing to broader legal team initiatives and matters across the organisation as required.
The Candidate
You will ideally have a minimum of 2 years’ PQE, gained within a highly regarded law firm or in-house legal team. Experience within the energy, infrastructure, utilities or resources sectors will be highly regarded, although candidates with strong commercial or regulatory experience and a genuine interest in the energy sector are also encouraged to apply.
Prior exposure to energy regulation, consumer law, regulatory compliance or another highly regulated industry would be particularly relevant.
Just as importantly, you will bring a commercial and pragmatic approach to legal advice, strong stakeholder skills and an interest in understanding how the business operates beyond the strictly legal issues.
This opportunity will particularly suit a lawyer who is curious, commercially minded and keen to develop specialist expertise in the rapidly evolving Australian energy market. A willingness to get involved, learn and take increasing responsibility will be essential.
