Senior Legal Officer (Baseline Required)

Allygroup is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Officer (EL1 equivalent) for a short-term secondment opportunity within a Commonwealth Government agency.

This opportunity is ideal for a lawyer with a strong background in regulatory, compliance and enforcement law who enjoys complex advisory work, stakeholder engagement, and delivering practical legal solutions in a fast-paced government environment.

The opportunity

You will join a specialist legal team providing high-quality legal advice on compliance, regulatory and enforcement activities across a complex legislative framework. Working closely with operational and policy stakeholders, you will support the delivery of critical legal services within a well-established government environment.

This engagement is for an initial seven-week secondment commencing in September 2026. The role is Canberra-based and primarily onsite, although flexible remote arrangements may be considered for an exceptional candidate.

About the team:

The team provides legal advice on a broad range of regulatory, compliance and decision-making functions under Commonwealth legislation. This includes advising on operational matters, statutory powers, information use and disclosure, enforcement activities, and regulatory decision-making.

The team also supports compliance and enforcement functions, providing advice on monitoring and investigation powers, warrant applications, civil penalties, legislative compliance, and administrative law issues.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

A minimum of 4+ years' post-admission experience, ideally operating at an EL1-equivalent level.





Demonstrated experience advising on regulatory, compliance, enforcement or administrative law matters.

Strong statutory interpretation, legal research and advisory skills.

Previous APS experience, or experience working within a Commonwealth Government or regulatory setting.

The ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly and build effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
