Maven Partners is partnering exclusively with a major Australian super fund to appoint a Senior Associate into its Melbourne or Sydney valuations team. In this role, you will oversee a group responsible for valuing unlisted assets on an annual, half-yearly or quarterly timetable.
As part of a function that has expanded significantly in recent years across Australia, the UK and the US, you will play a lead role in building out the fund’s valuation capability while overseeing a portfolio of approximately $40bn and rising across Infrastructure, Private Equity and Private Credit.
Responsibilities
- Review and challenge independent valuations across a range of unlisted investments, assessing valuation methodologies, assumptions, inputs and movements in value.
- Undertake detailed analysis of valuation movements, identifying the underlying commercial and investment drivers behind changes in asset values.
- Exercise independent judgement when assessing valuation outcomes and ensure conclusions are appropriately supported by robust analysis and documentation.
- Oversee relationships and engagements with external valuation providers, including the appointment, rotation and performance management of valuers across the portfolio.
- Help develop and continually improve valuation frameworks, controls, policies and processes for illiquid and non-traded investments.
- Work closely with investment, portfolio management, operations and other specialist teams to resolve valuation matters and provide constructive challenge where required.
- Monitor the performance of unlisted investments and relevant market conditions to identify circumstances that may warrant an out-of-cycle valuation.
- Analyse valuation data and produce insights for senior management, the Board and investment committees.
- Coordinate the valuation of individual assets,
ensuring external valuations are completed in line with policy and recorded accurately and within required timeframes.
- Support broader strategic initiatives within the valuations function, including identifying emerging risks, improving processes and developing solutions.
- Provide guidance, coaching and development to more junior members of the team, contributing to a collaborative and high-performing culture.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of valuation experience gained within a large accounting firm, a boutique valuation practice or an institutional or corporate investing environment.
- Solid technical valuation capability across varied sectors, including experience preparing reports, analysing information and forming conclusions.
- Self-starter who thrives in a team setting with concurrent project management demands.
- Experience running projects with multiple stakeholders and third-party providers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- High level of enthusiasm with a willingness to contribute to a growing function.
- An inquisitive mindset with lateral thinking ability.
- Advanced financial modelling proficiency, particularly for valuation work.
- Strong presentation skills and confidence using Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
- Familiarity with S&P; Capital IQ and Bloomberg.
