We are seeking an experienced Deputy Director – Commercialisation to play a key leadership role within a leading Australian higher education and research organisation.
This is a senior opportunity for an experienced commercialisation specialist to come in and be a true 2iC to the Director. You will provide both strategic and operational leadership across the commercialisation function, while leading a range of high-impact initiatives designed to strengthen the organisation's innovation and enterprise capabilities.
At this stage it is a standalone role that focuses on purely helping the Director. In the future and for the right candidate there will be a possibility of leadership. This role will focus on innovation across the enterprise to help translate world-class research and intellectual property into real-world commercial, economic, environmental and social impact.
Working closely with senior research leaders, academics, business units, industry partners, government and external stakeholders, you will support the organisation's strategic objectives across research commercialisation, intellectual property, knowledge transfer, licensing and venture creation.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Director in providing strategic and operational leadership across research commercialisation, IP management and enterprise development.
- Lead strategic initiatives,
high-impact projects and external partnerships aligned with organisational innovation and commercialisation objectives.
- Develop and implement programs that strengthen knowledge transfer, commercialisation and entrepreneurial capability across the research community.
- Develop and continuously improve commercialisation workflows, processes and frameworks supporting the management and commercialisation of research and IP.
- Support the development of a high-performing commercialisation team, including mentoring, professional development and effective resource management.
- Develop frameworks, policies and processes supporting the creation of new ventures and spin-out companies from research.
- Work closely with researchers and internal stakeholders to identify and develop opportunities for new ventures and spinouts.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to research commercialisation and intellectual property.
- Represent the organisation at internal and external forums, building relationships across industry, government, research and investment communities.
- Drive continuous improvement across service delivery, stakeholder engagement and operational effectiveness.
About You
You will ideally have:
- Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline,
or equivalent professional experience.
- Extensive experience across research commercialisation, innovation management, technology transfer or enterprise development.
- Strong knowledge of the Australian higher education, research and innovation ecosystem.
- Demonstrated experience commercialising university or research-based intellectual property.
- Experience across research partnerships, licensing, technology transfer and/or spin-out company creation.
- Proven ability to develop and execute strategic initiatives and build relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent commercial judgement, communication and negotiation skills.
- A genuine interest in translating research and innovation into tangible commercial and societal outcomes.
Why This Opportunity?
This is a rare prospect to join a purpose-driven organisation at a senior level and have a genuine impact on how research and innovation are translated into commercial outcomes.
You will have significant exposure to researchers, senior executives, industry, government, investors and emerging ventures, with the opportunity to shape commercialisation strategy, build new ventures and influence the broader innovation ecosystem.
If you are an experienced commercialisation or innovation leader looking for a role where you can combine strategy, commercialisation, research, partnerships and venture creation, this could be an excellent next step.
Screening for the role will commence the week of the 31st August 2026.
