Dentist / New Graduate Dentist – Build Your Career, Not Just Your First Job
Launceston, Tasmania
Full-Time | Salaried Position | Recent Graduates & Early-Career Dentists Encouraged to Apply
Looking for a fresh start?
If you are a new graduate or early-career dentist looking for somewhere to simply work from 9 to 5, this may not be the position for you.
But if you are looking for somewhere to learn, be mentored, build your own patient following, develop advanced clinical skills and potentially make a practice your professional second home, we would love to meet you.
We are looking for the right dentist to join Launceston Dental and Braeside Dental, two well-established practices located approximately 2 km apart in Launceston.
One of our long-standing senior dentists is retiring in November, creating a genuine opportunity for a new clinician to become part of an established practice, care for an existing patient base and gradually develop long-term relationships with those patients.
Two Practices. One Experienced Team.
Across our two practices we have:
- Eight dentists
- Two Oral Health Therapists
- A five-chair practice
- A four-chair practice
- Experienced clinical and administrative support teams
- A large and established patient database
- A broad mix of general and advanced dentistry
Our patients need someone who doesn't simply want to treat a tooth and move on.
They need a dentist who wants to know them, care for them, earn their trust and become their dentist for years to come.
That is the person we are looking for.
Your First Two Months – Foundations Before Complexity
We don't believe a new graduate should be thrown into complex dentistry simply because there is an appointment available.
Your first approximately two months will focus on establishing strong foundations, depending on your existing experience and confidence.
Your initial clinical work may include:
- Examinations and diagnosis
- Preventive and hygiene-related care
- Routine restorative dentistry
- Simple fillings
- Basic general dentistry
- Patient education
- Simple treatment planning
- Developing excellent clinical records
- Building communication skills and patient rapport
This gives you time to understand our systems, develop confidence and, most importantly, learn how to communicate with patients and build trust.
From there, your clinical scope grows as you grow.
A Genuine Mentorship Pathway
For the right candidate, we can develop a structured individual mentorship plan based around your skills, interests and progress.
You will have access to a highly experienced team with knowledge across multiple disciplines.
As your skills and confidence develop, mentorship can progressively include:
Restorative Dentistry → Crowns → Prosthodontics → Oral Surgery → Endodontics → Aligners → Dental Implants → More Complex Dentistry
You may progressively gain exposure to and mentorship in:
- Crown and bridge dentistry
- Prosthodontics
- Complex restorative dentistry
- Simple and surgical extractions
- Complex oral surgery
- Root canal treatment
- More advanced endodontics
- Cosmetic dentistry
- Clear aligner treatment
- Digital dentistry
- Implant diagnosis and treatment planning
- Guided implant dentistry
- Dental implant placement
- Complex multidisciplinary treatment
- Full-arch implant dentistry
Progression is not based simply on time.
It will depend upon your learning, judgement, clinical ability, confidence and demonstrated competence.
You will never be expected to know everything.
You will, however, be expected to want to learn.
Work Alongside an Experienced Clinical Team
One of the advantages of joining a larger dental team is that there is usually someone around to discuss a case with.
Our clinicians have extensive collective experience across:
- General dentistry
- Oral surgery
- Dental implants
- Full-arch dentistry
- Endodontics
- Prosthodontics
- Cosmetic dentistry
- Clear aligners
- Restorative dentistry
- Digital dentistry
Instead of feeling isolated when you encounter something unfamiliar, we want you to be able to ask, discuss, observe and learn.
Over time, we want you to become the person another young dentist asks for advice.
A Highly Digital Clinical Environment
Both practices are extensively digital and equipped to provide dentistry ranging from straightforward general treatment to complex rehabilitation.
Our technology includes:
- CBCT
- Multiple intraoral digital scanners
- Digital radiography
- Digital treatment planning
- Digital restorative workflows
- Guided implant workflows
- Modern surgical equipment
- Digital prosthodontic workflows
- Technology supporting cosmetic, restorative and implant dentistry
The breadth of treatment means that you can see where dentistry can take you, even while initially concentrating on mastering the fundamentals.
An Existing Patient Base That Needs a Dentist
This is an important difference.
You are not coming into an empty practice and being told to find your own patients.
Between the two practices we have a substantial established patient database requiring continuing care.
The retirement of one of our senior dentists in November will also mean that established patients will need continuity of care and a clinician they can develop confidence in.
This creates a genuine opportunity for the incoming dentist to gradually build their own following.
Our objective isn't simply to make your appointment book busy.
It is to reach the point where patients say:
“That's my dentist.”
Communication Comes First
Technical dentistry matters enormously.
But particularly for an early-career dentist, we believe that your ability to communicate, listen and create trust is equally important.
We are therefore particularly looking for someone who demonstrates:
- Exceptional communication skills
- Honesty and trustworthiness
- Reliability
- Empathy
- Genuine interest in patients
- A willingness to listen
- Humility and willingness to learn
- A strong work ethic
- Team spirit
- Accountability
- Long-term thinking
We want someone who is prepared to help when help is needed and who takes pride in belonging to the team.
And Then There Is Launceston…
Your career matters.
So does the life you have outside it.
Launceston offers something increasingly difficult to find in larger cities:
a genuine regional lifestyle without giving up the advantages of living in a substantial city.
It is a compact city surrounded by some of Tasmania's most beautiful countryside.
Cataract Gorge provides extraordinary walking and outdoor spaces virtually on the doorstep of the city, while the Tamar Valley begins just outside Launceston with vineyards, wineries, farms and some of Tasmania's best produce.
Launceston is also recognised internationally as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, reflecting the extraordinary food and agricultural culture of Northern Tasmania.
You can finish work and still have time for your life.
Weekends can mean hiking, cycling, food markets, wineries, exploring Tasmania, spending time outdoors or simply enjoying a quieter pace of life.
For someone considering moving from a larger Australian city or from overseas, Launceston can offer an opportunity to build both a professional career and a lifestyle.
See Who We Are Before You Apply
We encourage you to look through the websites of both:
Launceston Dental
and
Braeside Dental Launceston
Look at our practices, our clinicians and the range of treatment we provide.
We would rather you understand who we are before applying because we are not simply trying to fill a vacancy.
We are trying to find the right person.
Remuneration
The position will initially be offered on a salary basis, giving the successful candidate security while developing their skills, confidence and patient base.
Salary will be negotiable and see a gradual increase depending upon experience and the individual candidate.
As your clinical ability, patient base, contribution and performance develop, remuneration can be reviewed accordingly.
Who Should Apply?
We would particularly like to hear from:
- New dental graduates
- Dentists in their first few years of practice
- Dentists relocating to Tasmania
- Dentists looking for a genuine fresh start
- Clinicians who want mentorship
- Dentists who want to broaden their clinical scope
- People who genuinely enjoy communicating with patients
- Someone looking for a place to stay, contribute and grow
Who Should Probably Not Apply?
If dentistry is simply a 9-to-5 job for you, and you have little interest in learning beyond what you already know, building relationships with patients or becoming part of a team, we respectfully suggest that this role may not be the right fit.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting that type of position.
It simply isn't what we are trying to build.
Build Your Patients. Build Your Skills. Build Your Career.
You can start with simple dentistry.
Learn to do it exceptionally well.
Learn to communicate.
Learn to treatment plan.
Build patients' trust.
Then, with mentorship and experience, progressively expand into crowns, prosthodontics, surgery, endodontics, aligners, implants and complex dentistry.
There is no expectation that you arrive as an advanced dentist.
There is an expectation that you want to become one.
If that sounds like the beginning you are looking for, we would genuinely like to hear from you.
Apply through SEEK with your CV or email Directly with a short cover letter answering these three questions:
1.What kind of dentist would you like to become over the next five years?
1. What is most important for you in this job?
2. What would you hate the most in a job like this?
