Silentium Defence
Adelaide
Are you an engineer, mathematician or scientist who enjoys solving problems that do not have an obvious answer? Silentium Defence is looking for a Signal Processing Specialist with two or more years of relevant experience to join our Research and Development team.
You will help develop the algorithms that sit at the heart of our passive radar technology, working with talented scientists and engineers to explore new ideas, test hypotheses and improve the performance of systems operating in real-world environments.
This is an opportunity to continue developing your technical expertise while contributing to Australian technology that supports Defence, national security and critical infrastructure.
The Role
Reporting to the Principal Scientist, you will join our Research Team and contribute across the full research and development journey.
You may begin by investigating an emerging signal processing technique, developing a mathematical model or testing an algorithm using recorded data. From there, you could help design a field trial, analyse operational data and support the transition of a successful prototype into an operational product.
Your work will help Silentium Defence better understand passive radar behaviour, improve system performance and identify new applications for our technology.
What Your Day Could Include
- Exploring radar and signal processing research from academia and industry.
- Identifying techniques that could improve the capability of our passive radar systems.
- Developing and testing prototype algorithms, both in the office and in the field.
- Using Python and other scientific tools to analyse radar performance.
- Investigating unexpected system behaviour and identifying possible causes.
- Collaborating with software engineers to turn research code into operational capability.
- Assessing algorithm trade-offs and completing sensitivity analysis.
- Contributing to field trials and customer demonstrations.
- Presenting technical findings and recommendations to colleagues and stakeholders.
What You’ll Bring
We are looking for someone with strong foundations, an interest in applied research and the ability to learn quickly.
To be successful, you will have:
- A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related technical field.
- At least two years of experience in signal processing, algorithm development, scientific computing or a related area.
- Experience developing, implementing or researching signal processing algorithms or other complex algorithms.
- Strong coding capability in a scientific programming language, preferably Python.
- An analytical mindset and confidence working with complex technical data.
- A pragmatic approach to research and problem-solving, balancing technical rigour with time, cost and delivery requirements.
- The ability to explain technical concepts and document your work clearly.
- A collaborative and supportive approach to working with others.
- Australian citizenship and eligibility to obtain an NV1 security clearance.
- Experience in radar, electronic warfare, Defence, research and development, product development or field trials would be advantageous but is not essential.
What Success Looks Like
In this role, you will contribute to:
- A deeper understanding of passive radar signal processing.
- The successful development of novel radar algorithms.
- Measurable improvements in signal processing performance.
- The transition of research prototypes into operational capability.
- A supportive team environment built on integrity, curiosity and data-driven decision-making.
