About the Role
As our next 1st Class Welder, you will be responsible for carrying out high-quality welding and fabrication work across a range of structural, mechanical, and general steelwork projects. The role involves interpreting engineering drawings and welding specifications, preparing materials, setting up welding equipment, and completing welds to the required quality and safety standards.
This position will see you working both in the workshop and onsite, contributing to the fabrication, assembly, installation, repair, and modification of steel structures, chutes, pipework, machinery components, and other fabricated items. You will be expected to consistently produce quality workmanship while maintaining a solid focus on safety, accuracy, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
· Carry out high-quality welding and fabrication of structural steel, plate, pipework, chutes, machinery components, and general steelwork.
· Interpret and work accurately from engineering drawings, welding symbols, job specifications, and fabrication plans.
· Select the appropriate welding process, consumables, equipment, and techniques for each application.
· Perform welding using relevant processes such as MIG/MAG, FCAW, TIG, and/or MMA/Stick, as required.
· Prepare, fit, tack, weld, grind, and finish components to the required specifications and tolerances.
· Carry out welding repairs, modifications, and fabrication work on existing plant, equipment, and steel structures.
· Inspect completed welds and fabricated components to ensure they meet required quality, dimensional, and visual standards.
· Use hand tools, power tools, cutting equipment, grinders, oxy equipment, and other fabrication equipment safely and effectively.
· Work closely with supervisors, boilermakers, fitters, and other trades to complete `fabrication and site-based work efficiently.
· Complete all work in accordance with company procedures, approved welding procedures, relevant Australian Standards, and site requirements.
· Follow all workplace health and safety requirements, including the correct use of PPE and safe work practices.
Qualifications, Sills & Experience
- Relevant Australian trade qualification such as Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking/Welding) or equivalent recognised trade qualification.
- Previous experience working as a 1st Class Welder, Welder/Fabricator, or similar trade role.
- Strong practical experience in welding and fabrication, with the ability to consistently produce high-quality welds.
- Competent in one or more relevant welding processes, with experience in MIG/MAG, FCAW, TIG, and/or MMA/Stick highly regarded.
- Ability to confidently read and interpret engineering drawings, welding symbols, specifications, and job requirements.
- Experience with structural steel, heavy plate, pipework, chutes, machinery components, or general fabrication will be highly regarded.
- Strong understanding of weld preparation, joint fit-up, weld quality, distortion control, and finishing requirements.
- Ability to use welding machines, grinders, cutting equipment, hand tools, and power
- Safety, Health & Environment awareness and commitment.
