The Department for Environment and Water is seeking an experienced Technical Leader – Surface Water Surveillance to lead a passionate team delivering high-quality water monitoring across some of South Australia's most spectacular and remote landscapes.

About the Role:

The Technical Leader, Surface Water Surveillance is responsible for leading a team of technical staff to deliver safe, high-quality hydrometric and environmental monitoring outcomes. This includes planning and coordinating field operations, ensuring compliance with safety and governance requirements, overseeing data collection, delivery and reporting, managing equipment and assets, and supporting continuous improvement across monitoring systems and processes.

The position provides technical leadership and subject matter expertise in hydrometric monitoring, promotes a strong culture of safety, accountability and respect, and ensures operational activities are aligned with organisational priorities, standards and performance expectations.

The role is also responsible for developing team capability through coaching, mentoring and training, fostering effective stakeholder relationships, and supporting informed decision-making through timely reporting, analysis and communication of monitoring outcomes.

Contract: Temporary Backfill Contract up to 30 Jun 2028.

Essential Qualifications: An appropriate qualification in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Science or Hydrography is essential.

Special Conditions:

- May be required to participate in emergency preparedness, response and recovery activities required by government agencies.
- You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or provide evidence that you hold a valid working visa that allows you to work in Australia.
- This role requires candidates to provide a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check which must be renewed every three years before expiry. DEW will cover the cost of renewal.
- May be required to undertake intra or interstate travel, occasional overnight absences,



and work outside of the normal hours of work.

A successful applicant who is not currently employed by the Department for Environment and Water will be required to have an original photo identification document sighted and provide a valid Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) issued within the last 12 months. This information must be supplied by all applicants who are shortlisted for interview.

Remuneration: TGO4 - $97,996 min - $102,456 max p.a.
