This is a permanent full time role. Its purpose is to provide exceptional making, repairs and restoration services to violins, violas, cellos, double basses and bows at our Chatswood location.

Key Responsibilities
n
n
- Quote for and complete repairs and restoration work on customers' string instruments including:n n
- Gluing cracks and open seams
n
- Patching and repairing cracks using established methods
n
- 'Touching Up' varnish
n
- Replacing bridges, sound posts, nuts and fingerboards
n
n
- Complete specialised repairs and restoration work on stock instruments
n
- Liaise with suppliers as necessary to obtain parts needed to complete repairs and restoration work
n
- Perform 'set ups' on stock instruments including:n
n
- Shaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting a bridge
n
- Shaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting a sound post
n
- Shaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting a fingerboard and fingerboard nut
n
- Shaping, cutting, adjusting and fitting pegs
n
n
- Perform key tasks in the manufacturing of new instruments,
which in addition to the above 'set up' tasks include:n
n
- Cutting and fitting bass bars
n
- Thicknessing the top and back plates
n
- Building ribs and fitting them to the top and back plates
n
- Cut and fit a neck, peg-box and scroll
n
n
- Repairs and restoration to bows including:n
n
- Re-lapping
n
n
- Provide advice to customers about their existing instruments, which may be antique or recently made
n
- Co-ordinate with sales staff
n
- Organise and provide specialised training to junior team members
n
- Maintain a safe and tidy workspace
n
n
Skill & Experience
n
The ideal candidate would have industry experience and/or a qualification from one of the following schools:
n

- The Cremona International School of Violin Making
n
- The Chicago School of Violin Making
n
- The Mittenwald School of Violin Making
n
- The Markneukichnen School of Violin Making
n
- The North Bennet Street School, Boston
