The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) is expanding its regulatory and compliance functions and is seeking talented lawyers to join its Court and Tribunal Team.
This is a rare opportunity to practise in a dynamic and evolving area of government law. DTMI's responsibilities now extend beyond traditional transport matters and include complex compliance, enforcement and regulatory functions across the Maritime, Towing, On-Demand Transport and Road Law sectors.
As a member of the Court and Tribunal Team, you will be at the forefront of government enforcement activity, appearing in courts and tribunals, conducting prosecutions, managing appeals, advising investigators and decision-makers, and helping shape the interpretation and application of new and emerging legislation.
The legal issues are diverse, challenging and intellectually engaging. You will work with legislation that is evolving in response to changing industries, technologies and community expectations. This creates unique opportunities to develop expertise in regulatory litigation while contributing to the development of important public policy outcomes. Senior Solicitor (SCL5)
As a Senior Solicitor (SCL5) you will be expected to:
Conduct and manage complex litigation, prosecutions, reviews and appeals.Appear as counsel in courts and tribunals, including the State Administrative TribunalProvide strategic legal advice on regulatory compliance and enforcement mattersMentor and supervise junior lawyers and contribute to their professional developmentLead legal projects involving complex or emerging legislative issuesCollaborate with operational teams, investigators, external counsel and government stakeholders;Undertake other legal and policy-related work as required, consistent with the responsibilities of a Senior Solicitor (SCL5).
Senior Solicitor (SCL4)
As a Senior Solicitor (SCL4) you will be expected to:
Conduct litigation, prosecutions and tribunal proceedings with a high degree of autonomyPrepare and appear in courts and tribunals on behalf of the DepartmentAdvise on regulatory enforcement, compliance and administrative law mattersManage a diverse caseload involving both established and emerging legal issuesContribute to legal strategy and support less experienced practitionersCollaborate with operational teams, investigators, external counsel and government stakeholders.Undertake other legal and policy-related work as required, consistent with the responsibilities of a more senior solicitor (SCL4).




Solicitor (SCL3)
As a Solicitor (SCL3) you will be expected to:
Conduct litigation, prosecutions and tribunal matters under appropriate supervisionPrepare legal documents, evidence and submissionsProvide legal advice on compliance and enforcement issuesDevelop advocacy and courtroom skills through regular appearances and practical experienceBuild expertise in regulatory and administrative lawCollaborate with operational teams, investigators, external counsel and government stakeholders.Undertake other legal and policy-related work as required, consistent with the responsibilities of a Solicitor (SCL3).
Immediate Opportunities
We have two (2) 12-month fixed-term opportunities available for immediate filling, with the possibility of extension and/or permanency. Positions may be filled at SCL3, SCL4 or SCL5, depending on the successful applicant's experience and capabilities.
This process will establish a pool of suitable candidates for current and future fixed-term and permanent opportunities within DTMI for 12 months.

We are looking for lawyers who are motivated by advocacy, litigation and public interest outcomesThe panel will be assessing applicants against the following suitability requirements:
Senior Solicitor (SCL4-5)
Possess demonstrated litigation experience and the ability to manage court and tribunal matters with increasing levels of complexity and independence.
Solicitor (SCL3)
Demonstrate litigation or dispute resolution experience and be capable of undertaking litigation work with guidance and supervision from senior practitioners.
Ideal candidates will also demonstrate:
Experience or a strong interest in litigation, prosecutions, advocacy or dispute resolutionStrong written and oral communication skillsSound legal research, analysis and problem-solving abilitiesThe ability to manage competing priorities and deadlinesGood judgement and a practical, solutions-focused approachThe ability to build productive relationships with clients and stakeholdersA commitment to professional development and continuous learning
