The Department of Housing, Local Government and Community Development (DHLGCD) is dedicated to building stronger, more connected communities across the Northern Territory. Through innovative housing solutions, support for effective local governance, and initiatives that drive social and economic resilience, we work to enhance the wellbeing and opportunities of all Territorians.

We take pride in our approach to addressing real Territory challenges and delivering meaningful outcomes that restore the Territory lifestyle by shaping a thriving and inclusive Territory. Be part of a dynamic and passionate organisation committed to improving the life outcomes of all Territorians, and shaping the Territory by fostering community growth, resilience, and inclusion.

Apply your training, facilitation and cultural engagement skills in a rewarding role that supports Aboriginal interpreters across the Northern Territory.

As the Trainer, Aboriginal Interpreter Services (AIS),

you will work collaboratively with interpreters and AIS staff to develop and deliver training programs that build the skills, confidence and professionalism of Aboriginal language interpreters across the Northern Territory. You will facilitate workshops, deliver on-the-job training and assessment, and contribute to interpreter development pathways that support both new and experienced interpreters.

A key aspect of the role is delivering engaging training programs that support interpreter development and professional practice. You'll facilitate induction, health and legal interpreting training, support interpreters undertaking accredited learning, and help strengthen workforce capability through mentoring, assessment and quality-focused development activities.

To be successful, you will bring experience in adult education, training delivery or workforce development, together with excellent communication and relationship-building skills. You will have a solid understanding of the cultural, social and linguistic factors affecting Aboriginal people across the Northern Territory and a demonstrated ability to engage effectively with Aboriginal communities.

This role suits someone who thrives in a dynamic workplace and can successfully manage competing priorities while delivering quality results. You will bring a collaborative mindset, demonstrate initiative and adaptability, and be willing to travel to remote communities as required. A qualification in training and assessment, or the capacity to obtain a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, will be viewed favourably.

In return, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference every day by strengthening language access for Aboriginal people. You will enjoy a competitive NTPS remuneration package, including six weeks annual recreation leave, 17.5% leave loading, 12% superannuation and three days Christmas closedown leave. You’ll also benefit from flexible work arrangements, a supportive and collaborative team environment, and ongoing professional development with the chance to build a rewarding career in the NT Public Sector.
