About the role

This is a predominantly clinical role combining ophthalmic diagnostic testing and patient preparation with medical reception and administrative duties. It would suit an experienced ophthalmic or optical assistant who enjoys working directly with patients and is keen to further develop their clinical skills within a specialist ophthalmology practice.

You will work closely with ophthalmologists and the administrative team to provide excellent patient care and help ensure clinics run smoothly and efficiently. As a member of a small team, there will also be an element of reception/administrative work.

No two clinic days are exactly the same.

This is a hands on, clinical role. You'll perform diagnostic testing, prepare patients for consultation and assist with clinical procedures. You'll also be involved in reception and administrative tasks as required.

Key responsibilities

- Taking patient medical histories and preparing patients for consultation

- Performing and assisting with ophthalmic diagnostic testing, including:

- visual acuity (VA),

- iCare tonometry,

- auto-refraction,

- optical coherence tomography (OCT),

- Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA),

- fundus photography,

- optical biometry

- Assisting ophthalmologists with minor procedures

- Preparing clinical rooms and instruments

- Cleaning, sterilising and preparing clinical instruments





- Maintaining clinic room standards and supporting efficient patient flow

- Monitoring clinical stock levels and notifying relevant staff when supplies need to be reordered

Reception and administrative duties will include:

- Welcoming and checking in patients

- Answering phone and email enquiries professionally and efficiently

- Booking appointments and managing doctor schedules

- Processing referrals and incoming correspondence

- Processing billing and Medicare rebates

- Booking surgical cases onto surgeons' theatre lists

- Providing general administrative support to doctors and the reception team.

About you

Ideally you will have:

- Previous experience working in an ophthalmology or optometry practice

- Experience performing ophthalmic diagnostic testing, or a strong willingness and ability to learn

- A minimum of 2 years experience is desirable

- Previous medical or specialist reception experience is highly desirable

- Experience with minor procedures and/or sterilisation is desirable

- Familiarity with Best Practice VIP or similar medical software as well as experience and a thorough understanding of medical and surgical billing

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

- A warm,



professional and caring approach to patient care and the ability to work collaboratively with people of all ages and backgrounds

- Solid organisation, time management and attention to detail when working in a busy, fast-paced environment

- Reliability, initiative and a proactive, can-do attitude, with the ability to work independently once familiar with the expectations of the role

- Flexibility to work casual shifts, including occasional early starts and/or later finishes, and the ability to cover other staff shifts at short notice.
