Allambie Vet
New South Wales
Full-Time or Part-Time | Allambie Vet | Sydney's Northern BeachesFull-time over 4 days | Part-time considered | No Sundays or public holidaysYou probably already know how to be a great vet nurse. You're confident caring for patients, you know your way around a busy hospital, and you've developed plenty of clinical skills along the way.
But that's not really what this ad is about. We're looking for an experienced Veterinary Nurse or Vet Tech to join us at Allambie Vet.Of course, clinical skills matter.
But after more than 40 years of caring for pets on the Northern Beaches, we've learnt that the people who make the biggest difference to a hospital bring something more. They're the people who notice when a teammate is under the pump and ask, "What can I do?"Who can be busy without making everyone around them feel stressed.Who think about what their patient needs but also about the worried person on the other end of the lead or carrier.Who take responsibility, follow things through and care about the little details.Who ask questions, share what they know and genuinely want the people around them to do well.We can teach skills.
Finding the right person matters much more to us.So, who are we?
Allambie Vet is a busy, independently owned, family-run small animal hospital on Sydney's Northern Beaches.
We've been part of our local community for more than 40 years, and many of the families who walk through our doors have trusted us with generations of their pets.
We're proud of that.We have an experienced team of vets, nurses, animal attendants and client care staff who genuinely care about providing excellent medicine and a great experience for the people who trust us with their animals. We work hard.
We have high standards.
And we're busy. Some days run beautifully.Other days, surgery changes, an inpatient needs more attention than expected and an emergency arrives just as you've mentally started packing up.That's veterinary medicine. What matters to us is what happens next.People communicate.
Priorities change.
Someone starts setting up while someone else helps with the waiting clients.
We work out what needs to happen and get on with it together. We're busy, but you're not on your own.We want our nurses to actually nurse. Our nurses aren't here simply to hold animals for the vet or spend their day filling gaps. They're an important part of the clinical team and an important part of every patient's journey. Our nursing roster rotates through dedicated roles including Surgery, Procedures, Medical Treatment and Consulting, giving our nurses structure, variety and genuine responsibility for their area of the hospital.Depending on the day,
you could be involved in:Anaesthesia, surgery and patient recoveryCaring for medical and hospitalised patientsIV catheters, blood collection and fluid therapyDental procedures and dental radiographyDigital radiography and diagnostic imagingIn-house pathologyNurse consultationsPatient admissions and dischargesWorking alongside our vets on treatment plans and patient careInteresting medical and surgical cases that don't always read the textbookAnd because no two days in a veterinary hospital are identical, everyone still helps wherever they're needed. The people at the other end of the lead matter too.Excellent veterinary care isn't only about what happens to a patient in treatment. Our nurses spend a lot of time one-on-one with our clients, and those relationships are incredibly important to us.We want someone who notices when an owner is worried or overwhelmed.
Who takes an extra minute to explain something properly, checks that they understand their pet's medications, remembers to make the phone call they promised or simply thinks, "Is there anything else I can do to make this a little easier?"Often it's the small things people remember. We want our clients to leave feeling that their pet was genuinely cared for and that they were cared for too.Who we're looking forWe're looking for a qualified Veterinary Nurse or Vet Tech, ideally with at least 2 years' clinical experience. We're deliberately not going to give you a long checklist of every clinical skill we think you should already have.Instead, we're looking for someone who:Enjoys working in a busy, rapid-paced hospitalNotices what is happening around them and gets involvedCan prioritise and adapt when the day suddenly changesTakes initiative rather than always waiting to be askedCommunicates openly, kindly and respectfullyThinks about what their patient and their client might needTakes ownership and follows things throughIs comfortable asking for help – and equally quick to offer itWants to keep learning and improvingTreats every member of the hospital team with the same respectTakes pride in doing a good jobCan have a laugh with us along the wayYou don't need to know everything or have worked with every piece of equipment we have.
For the right person,
we're very happy to teach. What matters most is much harder to teach: kindness, initiative, work ethic, empathy and genuinely caring about the people and patients around you.Four days at work.
Three days for everything else. Most of our full-time nurses prefer longer shifts, allowing them to work their full-time hours across four days per week rather than the traditional five. We're also very happy to hear from an experienced nurse or technologist looking for part-time hours. We're closed Sundays and public holidays, and there are no overnight or on-call shifts. We are, however, a hospital.Occasionally a sick patient or emergency doesn't look at the clock before arriving, and there will be times when patient care means the team stays beyond the scheduled finish. We'd rather be upfront about that than promise you'll walk out the door at exactly the same time every day.Saturday shifts are shared across the nursing team and our rosters are planned in advance.A hospital that lets you do your job wellWe've invested heavily in our hospital so our team has the facilities and equipment they need to provide excellent patient care, including:Digital and dental radiographyUltrasound and endoscopyAdvanced anaesthetic monitoring and ventilatorsDedicated surgical and dental facilitiesIn-house pathologyA newly built dedicated cat hospitalBut equipment isn't what makes a great workplace.
People do.You'll work alongside experienced vets who value their nurses, a skilled nursing team with a broad range of experience, and a leadership team that's here in the hospital and understands what a busy veterinary day actually looks like.We support CPD and ongoing education, and if there's an area of nursing you're particularly interested in developing, we want to help you get there. What you'll get from us:Above-award remuneration based on your experience and skillsFull-time hours across 4 days per week, with part-time options availableNo Sundays or public holidaysNo overnight or on-call shiftsShared Saturday rosterCPD and ongoing in-house educationGenerous veterinary discounts for your own petsA structured nursing roster with genuine clinical responsibilityAn experienced veterinary and nursing team around youOpportunities to continue developing your clinical skills and interestsAnd hopefully, a workplace where you can do really good nursing with people you genuinely enjoy working with.Maybe you're not actively looking. That's okay too.But if you've read this far and found yourself thinking, "Actually, that sounds like somewhere I'd like to work," we'd really like to hear from you.
