Senior Building Designer - Development & Approvals

Not every drawing needs to be exciting
n
Some projects need practical, efficient plans that make a warehouse or storage facility work.
n
Others begin with a blank page and may become a bespoke home, hotel, major residential development or 20-storey apartment building.
n
The Jurkovic Group is looking for someone who can do both.
n
This is a newly created role for an experienced building design professional who can turn ideas into contemporary, buildable and commercially viable designs—and then help move them through the approval process.
n
You will work directly with the Managing Director in a standalone internal design role. You will have considerable autonomy, access to a diverse and long-term project pipeline, and the opportunity to influence projects from their earliest stage.
n
The role
n
You will be responsible for progressing projects from early concept and feasibility through to detailed documentation, consultant coordination and approvals.
n
Your work will include:
n
n
Preparing concept designs, layouts, models and detailed drawing packages.
n
Developing ideas into practical, buildable and commercially sound designs.
n
Working across industrial, commercial, residential, hospitality and multi-storey developments.
n
Preparing and coordinating planning, development and building approval documentation.
n
Liaising with councils, certifiers, consultants and relevant approval authorities.
n
Coordinating engineers, surveyors, planners and specialist designers.
n
Preparing or coordinating demolition plans, landscaping information, waste management plans and recycling requirements.
n




Responding to requests for further information and keeping applications moving.
n
Considering cost, yield, staging, buildability and commercial return during the design process.
n
Managing multiple projects, priorities and drawing revisions.
n
Identifying issues early and taking ownership of their resolution.
n
n
Projects may be located in South Australia or interstate. The role is based in the Adelaide CBD and does not ordinarily require interstate travel.

Who we are looking for
n
You may currently be working as a:
n
n
Senior Building Designer.
n
Senior Architectural Draftsperson.
n
Architectural Technician.
n
Architectural Graduate with substantial practical experience.
n
Registered Architect seeking a commercially focused in‐house role.
n
n
Registration as an architect is welcome but is not essential.
n
More important is your ability to demonstrate:
n
n
Strong building design and technical documentation capability.
n
Experience navigating planning, development or building approvals.
n
An understanding of construction, buildability and consultant coordination.
n
Confidence using contemporary drafting, modelling and visualisation software.
n
Commercial judgement—not simply design ability.
n
The ability to work independently without waiting to be directed at every stage.
n




Clear and confident written and spoken English.
n
Strong organisation across multiple active projects.
n
A personable and practical approach when dealing with councils, consultants and other stakeholders.
n
Drive, curiosity and the desire to take on larger and more varied work.
n
n
Experience across every project type is not required. We are interested in candidates who have robust foundations, broad thinking and the ability to adapt.
n
The opportunity
n
This is not a narrow drafting position and it is not a traditional role within a large architectural studio.
n
You will work closely with the decision‐maker, contribute at the earliest stage of a project and help shape how developments proceed.
n
The pipeline includes straightforward commercial requirements, bespoke design opportunities and major developments capable of progressing through many stages over a long period.
n
The successful person will have room to make the role their own.
n
Portfolio presentation You do not need to submit a portfolio with your initial application.
n
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to prepare and present a portfolio demonstrating the range and quality of their work.
n
You should be prepared to explain:
n

Your personal contribution to each project.
n
Your design thinking.
n
The commercial and buildability considerations.
n
Your involvement in technical documentation and approvals.
n
Any confidentiality limitations applying to the work presented.
n
