Job Description
NCI is a nationally significant research infrastructure capability supported through NCRIS
n
and a network of major collaborating organisations, including the Australian National
n
University, CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia, the University
n
of Recent South Wales and the NSW Government. Operational funding and strategic
n
capital investment are provided through a combination of Australian Government
n
investment, partner contributions and service-based revenue. NCI is hosted by the
n
Australian National University and governed by a Board comprising representatives of
n
collaborating organisations together with independent members. While operating within
n
the University's governance framework and complying with relevant ANU policies and
n
statutory obligations, NCI serves a national mission on behalf of the Australian research
n
and innovation community.
n
The Director is accountable to the NCI Board for the effective stewardship of NCI's
n
resources, the delivery of its strategic objectives, and the performance of the
n
organisation. The Director works closely with the Board Chair and the ANU Pro Vice-
n
Chancellor (Research Infrastructure and Entities) through the Executive Panel to
n
implement Board strategy, support effective governance, and ensure alignment between
n
NCI's national mission and its operational delivery. The position requires extensive
n
engagement with government, research institutions, industry partners, international
n
collaborators and funding agencies.
The Director is expected to represent NCI and
n
contribute thought leadership on the future of advanced computing, data infrastructure,
n
artificial intelligence, digital research platforms and related national capability priorities.

Qualifications
n
n
Demonstrated leadership and people management skills, including experience leading diverse teams, building capability, and supporting professional growth.
n
Strategic planning and organizational management skills, with the ability to set priorities, manage complex projects, and deliver results in a large institution.
n
Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with academic, professional, industry, and government partners.
n
Excellent communication skills, including clear written and verbal communication, negotiation, and presentation abilities suitable for senior-level forums.
n
Sound financial and resource management skills, with experience overseeing budgets, contracts, and operational performance.
n
Knowledge of higher education or research environments, including governance, compliance, and policy frameworks, or the ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge.
n
Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing, and experience fostering a respectful, culturally aware workplace.
n
Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent senior leadership experience in academia, public sector, or a comparable complex organization.
