The Role

n

Reporting into the organisation's Office of General Counsel, the Senior Lawyer will support the Research and Education legal stream and advise on a diverse portfolio of complex, high-volume matters.

n





The successful candidate will provide timely, practical and commercially focused legal advice that aligns with the organisation's strategic objectives, governance requirements and risk appetite.

Key responsibilities will include:

n

- Providing strategic and practical legal advice across research, education and related commercial activities.
n
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a broad range of complex agreements, including research collaboration agreements, grant and funding agreements, clinical trial agreements, research services agreements and consultancy arrangements.
n
- Advising on intellectual property matters arising from research activities, commercialisation initiatives and external partnerships.
n
- Supporting major domestic and international research projects involving multiple stakeholders, institutions and funding bodies.
n
- Providing legal guidance on education-related regulatory and compliance frameworks.
n
- Managing a high volume of matters autonomously while balancing competing priorities and commercial deadlines.
n
- Developing trusted and influential relationships with senior internal stakeholders, including researchers, executives, academic leaders and professional services teams.
n
- Working collaboratively with external partners, government bodies, research institutions and commercial organisations.
n




- Supporting the development of legal capability across the organisation through mentoring, knowledge sharing and guidance on research and education matters.
n
- Providing specialist support and broader legal team coverage when required.
n

About You

n

You will be a commercially minded and solutions-focused legal practitioner who is comfortable working within a large, complex and highly regulated environment.

n

You will possess:

n

n
- Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and a current Australian practising certificate.
n
- A minimum of five years' post-admission legal experience.
n
- Experience advising on complex commercial contracts and managing high-volume transactional legal work.
n
- A strong background in intellectual property, higher education, research, healthcare or a research-focused environment such as a medical research institute is really nice to have.
n
- Demonstrated experience drafting and negotiating research agreements, grant agreements, clinical trial agreements, research services agreements or similar commercial arrangements.
n
- The ability to work autonomously, exercise sound judgement and prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment.
n
- Strong commercial acumen and the ability to provide pragmatic advice that balances legal risk with organisational objectives.
n
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
n
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships and influence senior stakeholders.
n
- A collaborative approach and commitment to delivering a high standard of internal client service.
n
- The ability to adapt to a diverse range of matters, stakeholders and priorities.
