Job Description
Casual IoT Support Technician (Extra Low Voltage)
n
We're a family-owner Australian food manufacturer operating in Thomastown for over 80 years.
n
We are running IoT hardware that automates production and labour reporting. The system was built by an external consultant who has limited day-to-day availability, so we need a technically strong local technician on a casual, as-needed basis to help keep it running: diagnosing faults and getting reporting back online when something breaks.
n
About the Role
n
n
- Diagnose and repair faults across IoT sensors, controllers and single-board devices (Raspberry Pi, ESP32, Arduino class)
n
- Flash firmware, reconfigure devices, and recover bricked or unresponsive units
n
- Troubleshoot the data path end to end (sensor to device to network to server) and identify where reporting has broken
n
- Perform network diagnostics and configuration: modems, routers, switches, access points, static IPs, VLANs, PoE, and signal or coverage issues on the floor
n
- Debug communication protocols (MQTT, Modbus, I2C, SPI, serial) using logs, terminal and packet-level checks
n
- Attend reactive callouts when a device drops offline or a line stops reporting correctly
n
- Escalate complex or design-level issues to our external consultant, with clear notes on what's already been tried
n
- Leave short written notes after each visit covering root cause and what changed
n
n
Skills and Experiences
n
n
- Strong practical electronics skills: circuit-level fault-finding, reading schematics and datasheets, confident with a multimeter and ideally an oscilloscope
n
- Hands-on IoT deployment or support experience, not just theory
n
- Networking fundamentals strong enough to independently isolate a connectivity fault
n
- Comfort in a Linux command line environment (SSH, logs, systemd, basic config)
n
- Ability to attend site in Thomastown with your own tools and transport
n
- Able to give a realistic response time when called, even if not immediate, and stick to it
n
n
Nice to have
n
n
- Light scripting for device testing and automation (Python or Node.js)
n
- Experience with MQTT brokers, time series databases or similar telemetry stacks
n
- Factory or production workplace experience, food manufacturing in particular
n
- Embedded development or firmware experience
n
- Awareness of GMP and hygiene zoning requirements
n
n
What We Offer
n
This is a casual role with occasional call-outs and work offered as it comes up and paid by the hour at $40-60/hr, based on skills and experience.
