adaptbl is recruiting an experienced Privacy/FOI Adviser at the APS6 or EL1 level for our Commonwealth Government client. Working within the FOI and Privacy Team, the role will primarily support privacy matters, while also providing practical FOI guidance and casework assistance as required.
The labour hire engagement will run from 31 August to 6 November 2026 and 4 to 25 January 2027. However, the client may consider a continuous engagement from 31 August 2026 to 25 January 2027 for the right person, with a potential extension up to 6 months.
This full-time role is based in Canberra, ACT, with flexible working arrangements supported.
Please note: only Australian citizens who hold a minimum Baseline security clearance can be considered for this role.
Duties
- Provide timely and practical advice on privacy matters, including obligations under the Privacy Act 1988, the Australian Privacy Principles and relevant OAIC guidance and processes.
- Support privacy compliance activities, including reviewing and assessing privacy issues, risks, enquiries and internal practices.
- Provide guidance and assistance to the FOI Officer on FOI obligations, processes and case management.
- Assist with FOI matters, including document review, consultations, redactions and the preparation of decisions and correspondence.
- Plan and prioritise work across multiple matters while meeting strict statutory and operational deadlines.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with internal stakeholders and external parties where required.
- Transfer knowledge and provide practical guidance to a less experienced team member.
- Demonstrated experience in Commonwealth privacy work, including a strong understanding of the Privacy Act 1988, Australian Privacy Principles and relevant OAIC guidance.
- Sound knowledge of FOI obligations and processes,
with the ability to provide practical advice and support on FOI matters.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgement and deliver high-quality outcomes within tight deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to provide clear, practical and defensible advice.
- Experience mentoring or supporting less experienced staff will be highly regarded.
- Experience advising on statutory powers and functions will be highly regarded.
Requisite skills/experience
- Demonstrated experience in Commonwealth privacy work, including a strong understanding of the Privacy Act 1988, Australian Privacy Principles and relevant OAIC guidance.
- Sound knowledge of FOI obligations and processes, with the ability to provide practical advice and support on FOI matters.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgement and deliver high-quality outcomes within tight deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to provide clear, practical and defensible advice.
- Experience mentoring or supporting less experienced staff will be highly regarded.
- Experience advising on statutory powers and functions will be highly regarded.
Legal qualifications and a current practising certificate are not essential where candidates can demonstrate extensive and relevant privacy and FOI experience.
