We are currently seeking a motivated and detail-oriented National Trainer – Health and Safety Representative (HSR) to join our team at the National Team.
n
About the Role
n
This role provides high-quality training support across State Branches, delivering nationally consistent and compliant Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training programs.
n
The National Trainer will play a key role in strengthening workplace health and safety outcomes for AWU members by equipping delegates and HSRs with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to represent workers effectively.
n
The position requires regular travel across Australia and close collaboration with Branch officials, organisers, and members.
n
Flexible working arrangements to off set travel requirements.
n
Key Responsibilities
n
n
- Deliver accredited HSR training programs in line with relevant WHS legislation across multiple jurisdictions
n
- Develop, review and continuously improve training materials to ensure consistency and best practice nationally
n
- Support Branches in the coordination and delivery of training programs and initiatives
n
- Mentor and support delegates and HSRs in applying training outcomes in the workplace
n
- Maintain compliance with accreditation requirements and regulatory standards
n
- Contribute to the broader AWU training strategy and capability development
n

About You
n
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
n
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE) or higher
n
WHS qualification or a minimum of two years' experience in Work Health and Safety.
n
Current accreditation to deliver Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training (essential)
n
Solid knowledge of Australian workplace health and safety legislation and frameworks
n
Experience delivering training in union, industrial, or adult education environments
n
A commitment to trade union values, including solidarity, fairness, and collective strength
n
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences
n
Strong organisational skills and the ability to work across multiple projects and locations
n
A willingness to travel nationally as required

Key Requirements to Deliver HSR Training in NSW (as of May 2026):
n
Mandatory Qualification: TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or TAE40116 as an equivalent).
n
Experience: Minimum two years relevant experience in an occupational or work health and safety role.
n
Approval: Trainers must be approved by SafeWork NSW.
n
Crucial Note: Simply holding the certificate is not sufficient; the trainer must have the specific WHS industry experience and be approved by SafeWork NSW.
