Graduate Program Overview

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) graduate program provides you with valuable experience in the energy sector, building your skills and knowledge for your future career and providing an opportunity for career progression. The program delivers a pathway for you to be part of the AEMC’s team of policy advisers and, more broadly, contribute to delivering a decarbonised, affordable and reliable energy system for consumers.

Our work is interesting and purposeful, as we solve complex energy related problems. Key to our success is our ability to lead, collaborate, listen, adapt, and influence, working in an environment that fosters continuous learning, collaboration, and inclusion.

As a Graduate Adviser, you will participate in policy development, engage with other organisations and work to improve the operation of the energy sector for the benefit of consumers. You will develop skills in project management, analytical thinking, analysis, stakeholder engagement and communication, with problem-solving and writing capability being critical success factors.

You will gain exposure to a variety of complex energy policy issues, work on multiple projects and contribute to reviews and rule changes by undertaking research and analysis, contributing to policy design, stakeholder engagement processes, and project management activities.

Your responsibilities will increase over the course of the program as your skills, experience and confidence grows, so that by the end of the program you will apply your research, analytical and communication skills to lead a small project or manage parts of a major, complex project led by others, to formulate policy advice and recommendations.

The projects you may be involved in include:

- Annual market reports: Gain deep insights into the energy sector by researching and analysing key developments, emerging trends, and regulatory changes shaping Australia’s energy markets.
- Market reviews and advice: Contribute to strategic, long-term projects that aim to develop the market settings that will help the people of Australia benefit from lowest-cost, low emissions, reliable, secure and safe power.
- Rule changes: The National Electricity, National Energy Retail, and Gas Rules govern how energy markets operate. You may work with experienced staff on assessing rule change proposals and contributing to the development of rules that promote the protected, reliable and secure supply of energy
- Recent graduate projects have included: Modelling future residential electricity prices, formalising cyber security roles and responsibilities in the gas rules,

supporting the AEMC's work on data centres and developing strategies to accelerate the rollout of electric vehicle charging stations.
