For more than 140 years, RSPCA Queensland has been a leading animal welfare charity, dedicated to improving the lives of animals - whether domestic, farmed, or native. We care for over 42,000 animals annually, relying on the generosity of animal lovers like you to fund 91% of our life-changing services.
Our Purpose: We exist for animals to live better lives.
About the Role
Employment Type: Permanent, Part-time
Renumeration: $29.45 per hour + super & other benefits
When someone is escaping domestic and family violence, worrying about the safety of a beloved pet can make an already difficult situation even harder. Our Pets in Crisis program helps remove that barrier by providing safe housing and support for animals while their owners seek safety and stability.
We’re looking for a compassionate and highly organised Pets in Crisis Officer to support the day-to-day delivery of this important program.
Working closely with clients, domestic and family violence support services and teams across RSPCA Queensland, you’ll coordinate referrals, animal intake and return, care arrangements and ongoing case management. You’ll be a key point of contact for clients throughout their time in the program, providing clear communication, practical support and reassurance while coordinating the care of their animals behind the scenes.
This is a part-time opportunity (offering 22.8 hours per week) where strong case management, communication and coordination skills can make a genuine difference to both people and their pets.
What We’re Looking For
You’re a compassionate, grounded and emotionally intelligent person who can support people through sensitive and challenging circumstances with empathy, discretion and respect. You understand the importance of listening without judgement, maintaining professional boundaries and communicating clearly when situations may be complex or emotional.
You’re calm under pressure, adaptable and solutions-focused, with the judgement to navigate changing circumstances and competing needs. You’re naturally organised and dependable, comfortable managing multiple cases and ensuring important details, follow-ups and commitments don’t fall through the cracks.
Above all,
you’re a genuine people person who builds trust and robust relationships with ease. You enjoy working collaboratively with different teams and external partners and are motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful difference for people and their pets.
What You’ll Do
In this role, you will:
- Coordinate referrals, intake, care arrangements and the safe return of animals through the Pets in Crisis program.
- Act as a key point of contact for clients, providing regular updates and clear information throughout their involvement in the program.
- Work closely with domestic and family violence support workers to coordinate appropriate support for clients and their animals.
- Coordinate safe and appropriate transport of animals to and from RSPCA Queensland locations.
- Support clients to access pet-friendly housing and other assistance through the Pets in Crisis Support Only program.
- Collaborate with our animal care, foster and veterinary teams to coordinate appropriate care and capacity for animals entering the program.
- Liaise with external providers and community partners to connect clients with additional support where required.
- Maintain accurate case notes, records and program data, including coordinating veterinary and other appointments.
- Support regional RSPCA Queensland teams delivering the Pets in Crisis program.
- Contribute ideas and feedback to continually improve program processes, efficiency and client experience.
- Help capture program outcomes and success stories that demonstrate the impact of Pets in Crisis.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
- Experience in human or animal welfare services, case management, client support or a related environment is highly regarded.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and to manage clients who can be experiencing heightened emotions.
- Strong relationship-building skills and confidence working collaboratively with internal teams, community organisations and external service providers.
- Excellent organisation and case coordination skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and follow through on actions.
- The ability to work autonomously while remaining connected and collaborative within a broader team.
- Sound judgement, problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm and professional in challenging or sensitive situations.
- Strong administration and computer skills, including confidence using Microsoft Office and maintaining accurate records.
- The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
- A genuine commitment to animal welfare and alignment with RSPCA Queensland's values.
- The capacity to undertake physical duties and safely handle a minimum weight of 10kg.
