NRL National (Serology) Reference Laboratory (NRL) operates as a division of St Vincent's Institute (SVI) whose mission is to produce world class science: inspired by discovery, driven by purpose. Contracted by the Department of Health and licensed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), NRL supports team-oriented scientific partners worldwide in the promotion of accurate diagnosis and management of human communicable diseases, including but not limited to HIV, HCV and HTLV. It does this by providing specialised services, including pre- and post-market evaluations of test kits, provision of quality assurance programmes to laboratories, specialised testing services, and consultation, education, and training for laboratories nationally and internationally. NRL holds the unique position of being the only organisation world-wide that delivers this full suite of services, and with significant future opportunities to significantly grow NRL's market and services globally.

THE ROLE
We are seeking a full-time Grade 1 Medical Scientist to provide support to NRL's Laboratory Operations Manager including assisting with laboratory safety, monitoring and maintaining equipment, supervision, scheduling and training of laboratory staff, maintaining laboratory stocks and assisting with installation of new equipment (Installation,
Operation and Performance Qualification).
The successful candidate is expected to maintain competency in equipment maintenance and routine laboratory housekeeping activities to support staff training and provide operational backup when required. The role will require operational support and maintenance of NRL's environmental monitoring systems in addition to occasional On Call duties. They will demonstrate a strong commitment to quality and be competent in the use of NRL's change management system, supplier management system, assist with operational risk assessments and compliance management.
The successful candidate will also be expected to foster collaborative relationships both internally and externally and support the Laboratory Operations Manager in maintaining service contracts, liaising with service providers and in reviewing service provider reports. Professional development opportunities in this role will be provided to assist the incumbent to develop higher skills such as management/leadership in order to step up to 2IC capacity in the future.

WHO WE ARE SEEKING
The successful candidate will have:
Qualification in B.Sc., B.App. Science degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent
Demonstrated experience working in an accredited pathology laboratory or alternative regulated laboratory environment.
Experience working in, and an in-depth understanding of quality systems and requirements (highly desirable)
Experience in a Health and Safety role within a laboratory (well regarded).
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to think independently and to provide proactive responses to unexpected results.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Excellent organisational skills; able to prioritise work during busy periods.
Ability to follow documented procedures.
Able to troubleshoot unfamiliar scenarios and apply critical thinking and common-sense.
Confidence in working autonomously and apply sound decision making, but able to exercise appropriate judgement and seek advice and support as appropriate.
To be considered for this role, you will be required to provide evidence you have permanent or temporary working rights in Australia.
SALARY:
- $78,635 to $90,943 per annum, plus 12% superannuation.
- Salary applied will be dependent upon successful candidates' current level, experience and qualifications.
- Up to $15,900 FBT exempt salary packaging and up to $2,650 FBT exempt meals and entertainment packaging.
