We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Trials Officer based at Graytown to plan, schedule and conduct explosive ordnance test and evaluation activities, including small to medium calibre dynamic trials, grenade and mortar trials, and a range of static trials. Working closely with the Trials Manager, you will ensure trial site availability and resources are in place to support safe and effective trial preparation activities, contributing to the delivery of safe and suitable explosive ordnance and materiel to the Australian Defence Force.

The role involves coordinating and conducting test and evaluation activities in accordance with JPEU procedures, reporting on outcomes, developing and reviewing technical documentation, liaising with external agencies, supporting training and familiarisation activities, assisting with the acquisition and introduction of new equipment, contributing to process improvement initiatives, and acting as a Safety Officer for non-JPEU activities in accordance with sponsor requirements.

About our Team

The Task Management Trials Team is a small team working in a dynamic environment that works closely with the Range Operations Team to conduct trials to support Army, Navy, Air Force, DSTG, CASG and LEA. The Task Management Team is critical in this process as they carry out the overall planning and resource management for the dynamic and static explosive ordnance and material trials carried out on the range. They will work closely with the other functions of the Establishment including ammunition preparation, data acquisition, maintenance and logistics.

The right person for this role will show the flexibility to respond to the changing context and shifting priorities of JPEU, to achieve business outcomes. In this role, the individual will provide support to a geographically dispersed team.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in explosive test development and delivery, particularly in small and medium calibre testing, including weapons, targets and associated support systems. Experience with small arms weapons, ballistics, test system design, test and evaluation activities, and measurement practices will be highly regarded. An understanding of Lean and Continuous Improvement methodologies would also be advantageous.

We are seeking a ballistics or explosives skilled who can apply their technical expertise within a dynamic test and evaluation environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, sound engineering judgement and a strong commitment to delivering high-quality Defence trial outcomes. They will be adaptable, safety-focused and driven to continuously improve systems,



processes and ways of working, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of critical Defence testing activities while supporting a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Security Clearance

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.

Mandatory Qualifications

This technical position requires the individual to have obtained a recognised Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 5 qualification in a relevant technical domain or relevant skills and work experience such that an individual can reasonably achieve a recognised AQF qualification if required by the position.
