An established specialist engineering consultancy is seeking a Hydraulic Engineer to join its team in Caringbah.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with conventional hydraulic building services experience to develop specialist expertise in forensic and remedial engineering. You will receive comprehensive support and mentoring while gaining exposure to investigations, causation reporting, insurance matters, construction disputes and rectification projects.
The position would suit someone who enjoys investigating technical issues, understanding why systems have failed and developing practical solutions. The consultancy works across commercial, residential, healthcare, retail, aged care, transport, correctional and industrial environments.
Key responsibilities
- Investigate hydraulic system failures, defects and performance issues.
- Undertake site inspections, surveys and technical assessments.
- Review hydraulic designs, drawings, specifications and construction documentation.
- Assess installations for compliance with relevant Australian Standards, codes and regulatory requirements.
- Investigate issues relating to water supply, sewer, stormwater, roof drainage, gas services, pipes and fittings.
- Assist with determining the cause and extent of damage or system failure.
- Prepare transparent, evidence-based technical and causation reports.
- Develop scopes of work and documentation for remedial and rectification projects.
- Prepare hydraulic designs and supporting technical documentation where required.
- Review proposed rectification solutions, contractor scopes and associated costs.
- Liaise with clients, insurers, loss adjusters, lawyers, building consultants, contractors and other technical specialists.
- Attend meetings and provide technical advice throughout investigations and remedial works.
- Manage assigned projects, priorities and reporting deadlines.
- Maintain accurate inspection notes, photographs and supporting project records.
About you
To be successful in this position, you will ideally have:
- Approximately 3–8 years of experience in hydraulic engineering or hydraulic building services design.
- Tertiary qualifications in engineering or another relevant technical discipline.
- Current registration as a NSW Registered Design Practitioner in a relevant class.
- Experience designing or assessing water, sewer, stormwater, roof drainage and associated hydraulic systems.
- Working knowledge of the National Construction Code, Australian Standards and relevant NSW requirements.
- Strong technical analysis and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to prepare accurate, well-structured technical reports.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Confidence conducting site inspections and communicating with clients and contractors.
- Strong attention to detail and an objective,
evidence-based approach.
- The ability to manage multiple matters and work both independently and collaboratively.
Previous forensic engineering, expert reporting, insurance or remedial consultancy experience would be advantageous but is not essential. Full support will be provided to help the successful candidate develop these capabilities.
What’s on offer
- A genuine pathway into the specialist field of forensic engineering.
- Direct mentoring and technical support from an experienced senior forensic engineer and expert witness.
- Exposure to varied and technically interesting investigations.
- Opportunities to work on matters ranging from strata and insurance claims through to major losses.
- Experience across both forensic investigations and remedial engineering projects.
- Development in technical reporting, causation analysis and expert-witness processes.
- A supportive environment where you can broaden your expertise beyond traditional hydraulic design.
- A conveniently located Caringbah office.
Why consider this role?
This position offers something different from a traditional building services consultancy role. You will apply your hydraulic engineering knowledge to determine why failures have occurred, provide defensible technical opinions and help clients identify practical rectification solutions.
It is an ideal next step for a Hydraulic Engineer looking to build a valuable specialist skill set with strong mentoring and long-term professional development.
