About the role:
The NSW Crime Commission’s purpose is to disrupt, reduce and prevent the incidence of organised and other serious crime in New South Wales. The Commission is structured into several divisions, support teams and specialist units.
We are seeking a highly capable and strategic Chief of Staff to join the Commission in this newly created role, reporting directly to the Commissioner. As Chief of Staff, you will lead the Office of the Commissioner and support the Commissioner and broader Executive in the delivery of Commission’s strategic outcomes, operational objectives and Executive support services. The role is a key strategic advisor to the Commissioner, and responsible for high level strategic stakeholder and media management.
The role is focused upon leading the development, coordination, delivery and implementation of a portfolio of strategic priorities, initiatives, research and analysis that support organisational objectives and Government commitments. The role also leads in parliamentary and ministerial liaison for the Commission, and media and communications.
This is a unique chance for an experienced leader with exceptional stakeholder management, communication, and strategic thinking skills to work at the centre of decision-making and organisational leadership.
Key Accountabilities:
- Lead and undertake research, analysis and review of complex strategic issues, identifying emerging trends, and developing evidence-based strategies to improve the performance of the Commission, track and implement whole of government reform issues that impact on the Commission, and build the external reputation of the Commission.
- Provide advice and information to inform relevant stakeholders and support strategic directions.
- Lead external stakeholder engagement, including managing all media requests to the Commission.
- Lead and manage internal and external communications, including event coordination.
- Lead and manage the OCOM team to support the Agency in meeting strategic commitments and/or roll-out of significant policy initiatives.
- Lead and facilitate stakeholder engagement, consultation and negotiation on policy issues to identify and develop solutions and make recommendations that account for relevant factors and support sound policy decisions and approaches.
- Oversee the coordination preparation of reports, briefs and correspondence to inform or respond to Agency, Government and/or Parliamentary inquiries and requests.
- Supports strategic leadership, management, advice and delivery to the Commissioner through strategic planning, performance planning and evaluation frameworks, such as implementation of the Commission’s strategic plan into actionable stages.
- Develop and implement strategies for the monitoring and evaluation of all strategy, performance and policy initiatives to identify risks and issues and ensure the achievement of desired outcomes, including developing organisational KPIs and systems for tracking and reporting on these to ensure implementation of the Commissioner’s priorities.
- Degree in Public Administration, Social Sciences or Communications based qualifications.
- Knowledge of legislation relevant to the Commission’s activities and or related portfolio, government functions and the legislative process.
- Experience in leading the development of strategic advice and frameworks.
- Proven track record providing high-level strategic advice to heads of agencies and Senior Executives, on the management and implementation of government priorities.
- Significant experience in media and communications.
- Experience in leading and managing a team.
- Outstanding interpersonal, presentation, and influencing skills, including the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical, conceptual, problem-solving and issues management skills, as well as the ability to produce well-written documentation for a variety of audiences.
- High-level integrity, ethics, judgement and an ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information with tact and discretion.
Security vetting:
You must be an Australian citizen to be eligible to work at the NSW Crime Commission.
The recommended candidates must be willing to participate in and secure appropriate security clearances by providing comprehensive details about their personal and financial interests and other relevant information about themselves, their families and their associates.
The Crime Commission Regulation 2022 under the Crime Commission Act 2012 stipulates that it is a condition of employment at the Commission that a member of staff obtain and maintain:
- a security clearance issued by the Commissioner, and
- a security clearance issued by the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency that the Commissioner determines is necessary for the position.
