Overview and Purpose of the Position
n
We require a motivated Chemical Engineer to join the team who are building and starting-up our research facility.
n
The Chemical Engineer will support the research and development then scale-up of our zero emission smelting technologies. This new technology implements processes and chemistries not yet utilised in the industry.
n
The position will require intermittent rostered shift work for short periods (up to two weeks at a time) when we operate the R&D; smelter for 24x5 or 24x7 operating trials.
n
Location
n
The position is based at our Altona North facility in the inner west of Melbourne, Victoria.
n
Travel to interstate locations for trials will be required.
n
Duties
n
The Chemical Engineer, R&D; will carry out the following duties and tasks:
n
Prepare designs for chemical process systems and planning control systems for processes including iron ore melting, iron ore reduction and slag separation
n
Monitor the operation and maintenance of pilot smelter equipment to achieve maximum efficiency under safe operating conditions
n
Ensure that correct materials and equipment are used and that they conform to specifications
n
Diagnose process upsets or malfunctions in the pilot smelter and implement remedial action
n
Investigate pollution-control requirements and develop solutions and procedures to assist in meeting environmental standards
n
Develop and review material selection recommendations in accordance with design specifications and factors such as strength, durability and cost
n
Plan and implement laboratory operations to develop new materials and fabrication procedures for new materials to fulfil cost and performance targets of materials such as metals and ceramics
n
Review product failure data and implement laboratory tests to establish or reject possible causes, and advise on ways to overcome any problems
n
Assist with equipment setup, cleaning, and maintenance activities
n
Work with tradespeople and other engineers to prepare equipment for trials and implement process and equipment improvements
n
Support the installation and commissioning of new laboratory and testing infrastructure
n
Assist with development of customised testing and sample collection methods
n
Contribute to safety documentation including risk assessments and Job Safety Analyses
n
Maintain accurate records of trials, experimental data, and project activities
n
About You
n
You are a practical, detail-oriented engineer who enjoys working in hands-on technical environments and contributing to innovative research projects.
n
Required qualifications, skills and experience:
n
A degree in Chemical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or similar.
n
Minimum of five years of experience in high temperature process operations (steel smelting or glass manufacturing) including high-temperature refractories,
fuel combustion systems, furnace maintenance practices, operational lifecycle management
n
Experience in planning and directing furnace start-up and cooldown sequences
n
Experience in ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 management systems and auditing
n
Lean Six Sigma or Six Sigma Black Belt certified
n
Competent in Minitab, AutoCAD and Office applications
n
Highly regarded:
n
Qualifications in project management (e.g. MBA)
n
Knowledge of hazardous area safety and industrial safety systems
n
Experience in robotics and automation
n
Experience in working with oxy fired systems
n
Knowledge of statistical and process data analysis
n
Prior experience working on rotating shift patterns
n
People and Leadership Skills
n
The role interfaces with various other parts of the organisation such as accounting, purchasing, and health & safety.
