2-Year Graduate Program | IMRA Surgical | Melbourne
n
About IMRA Surgical
n
IMRA Surgical develops highly realistic synthetic anatomy and surgical training models used to support the training, development and adoption of robotic and laparoscopic surgery.
n
We are looking for a Graduate Engineer – Product Development to join our Product Development team through a structured two-year graduate program designed to build strong practical engineering capability from the ground up.
n
This is a highly hands-on role for someone who enjoys building, testing, solving problems and turning ideas into physical products.
n
The Graduate Program
n
Year 1 – Learn How We Build
n
Your first year will be focused on working closely with our Product Development and Material Science teams as a Prototype Assembler.
n
You will learn IMRA's materials, manufacturing processes and product architecture by directly building and testing prototypes.
n
You will gain practical experience in:
n
n
- Building anatomical prototypes and development models
n
- Working with polymers, hydrogels, silicones and other synthetic materials
n
- Understanding manufacturing processes, tooling and assembly methods
n
- Following drawings, specifications and work instructions
n
- Identifying manufacturing and design issues through hands-on testing
n
- Supporting engineers and scientists through product development iterations
n
- Recording test results and development data
n
n
The objective is simple: understand how our products are made before you start designing the next generation of them.
n
Year 2 – Develop Products
n
In your second year, you will progressively apply the knowledge gained during Year 1 to take greater ownership of product and model development.
n
You will work with the wider Product Development team to:
n
n
- Design, build and iterate new surgical models and product concepts
n
- Develop prototypes and evaluate different design approaches
n
- Use CAD to support component and product design
n
- Develop and execute test plans
n
- Analyse test data and communicate findings
n
- Prepare engineering test reports and development documentationSupport design reviews and risk assessments
n
- Translate clinical and user requirements into engineering solutions
n
- Work with manufacturing teams to ensure products can be produced reliably and at scale
n
n
You will still spend significant time building and testing. We believe strong product engineers should understand their products physically, not just through CAD and documentation.
n
About You
n
You will ideally have recently completed, or be close to completing, a degree in:
n
Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Design Engineering, or a similar discipline.
n
We are looking for someone with:
n
n
- A solid engineering and problem-solving mindset
n
- An interest in anatomy, surgery and medical technology
n
- Some understanding of human anatomy
n
- Practical CAD capability
n
- An understanding of engineering iteration and product development
n
- Familiarity with test plans, test reports and data analysis
n
- An understanding of engineering risk assessment
n
- Strong attention to detail
n
- A willingness to build, test, fail, learn and iterate
n
n
Most importantly, you should enjoy making things.
n
This role will suit someone who is just as comfortable at a workbench building a prototype as they are analysing data, developing a CAD model or documenting why a design worked.
n
What You'll Learn
n
By the end of the two-year program, you will have developed practical experience across the full product development lifecycle — from materials and prototyping through to design, testing, validation and manufacturing.
n
You will have worked alongside engineers, material scientists, clinicians and manufacturing specialists developing physical products for the surgical technology industry.
n
For the right person, the program is intended to provide a pathway into an ongoing Product Development Engineer role within IMRA Surgical.
