Full Stack Engineer | TypeScript, Node.js, React, AWS and AI

This is a hands on, mid level software engineering role.

- You are currently based in Sydney, or are able to commute reliably to our Sydney office five days per week.

- You have current Australian working rights.
n
- You have at least 4 years of professional commercial software development experience.
n
- You have recent commercial experience with Node.js and Express.js or NestJS.
n
- You have recent commercial experience with React or Next.js.
n
- You have experience developing and maintaining REST APIs, databases, authentication systems and third party integrations.
n
- You have practical experience deploying and supporting production applications in AWS.
n
- You are comfortable working across both back end and front end development.
n
- You have experience taking ownership of an existing application or unfamiliar codebase.
n
n
This role is not suitable for graduate developers, front end only developers, data analysts, project managers, candidates seeking a fully remote position, or applicants without commercial TypeScript and Node.js experience.

We are looking for a capable and motivated Full Stack Engineer who can take ownership of existing applications and contribute to the development of current secure, reliable and maintainable products.
n
About the role
n
You will work across the full application lifecycle, from understanding business requirements and reviewing existing codebases, through to development, testing, deployment and production support.
n
This is a role for an engineer who is comfortable investigating problems independently, working through complex business logic and taking responsibility for delivering complete solutions.
n
Your strongest skills may be in back end development, but you must also be comfortable implementing and maintaining front end functionality.
n
You will collaborate with software engineers, IT, project management, UX and UI designers and client stakeholders.
n
Key responsibilities
n
n
- Develop and maintain full stack web applications using TypeScript, Node.js and React based technologies.
n
- Take ownership of existing software products following a structured technical handover.
n
- Review unfamiliar codebases, diagnose issues and implement maintainable solutions.
n
- Design,
develop and maintain REST APIs, authentication systems, data models and third party integrations.
n
- Implement complex business logic, calculations, validation rules, permissions and workflow automation.
n
- Build responsive and accessible user interfaces from established UX and UI designs.
n
- Integrate AI and large language model services into practical business applications.
n
- Develop document processing, contextual retrieval, Retrieval Augmented Generation and structured output capabilities.
n
- Improve AI generated outputs for relevance, accuracy, consistency and reduced duplication.
n
- Integrate applications with third party APIs, webhooks, Microsoft 365 and enterprise systems.
n
- Support automated testing, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting and production releases.
n
- Maintain transparent technical documentation, including README files, architecture notes, technical decisions and deployment instructions.
n
- Communicate technical decisions, risks, limitations and dependencies clearly to both technical and non technical stakeholders.
n
n
You should be able to debug issues across multiple application layers, understand unfamiliar code and identify the underlying cause of technical problems.
n
Back end development
n
Commercial experience with Node.js and Express.js or NestJS.
n
You must be comfortable designing and maintaining:
n
n
- REST APIs
n
- Authentication and authorisation systems
n
- Third party integrations
n
- Business logic
n
- Calculations and validation rules
n
- Complex conditional workflows
n
- Error handling and production troubleshooting
n
n
Commercial experience with React or Next.js.
n
You must be able to implement responsive, accessible and maintainable interfaces from established designs.
n
You should understand component architecture, state management, API integration, form validation, error handling and cross device behaviour.
n
Databases
n
Hands on experience with MongoDB or another non relational database.
n
You should be able to design structured and maintainable data models.
n
Experience with relational databases and SQL is advantageous.
n
AWS and production delivery
n
Practical experience deploying, maintaining and supporting production applications in AWS.
n
You should understand:
n
n
- Source control and branching practices

- Continuous integration and deployment
n
- Production releases

- Logging and monitoring
n
- Troubleshooting
n
- Backup and recovery
n
n
AI and LLM integration
n
Experience integrating AI or large language model services through APIs.

You should have a practical understanding of:

- Improving relevance, accuracy and consistency

Experience with embeddings, vector databases, AI agents or MCP integrations is highly regarded.

Software quality and documentation
n
You should have a practical approach to automated testing, code reviews, debugging and software quality.
n
You must be able to document your work clearly enough for another engineer to understand, maintain and extend it.
n
Security expectations
n
Our applications may process confidential, financial, operational and personal information.
n
Security awareness must be part of how you design, develop, test and review software.
n
You should understand the fundamentals of:
n

- Authentication and role based access control
n
- Data privacy and appropriate handling of sensitive information
n
- Encryption in transit and at rest
n
- Secrets and credential management
n
- Logging and auditability
n
- Dependency and vulnerability management
n
- Backup and recovery
n
n
Deep cybersecurity specialisation is not required, but experience with OWASP, ISO or NIST practices is advantageous.
