Job Description
Trina Energy Storage is seeking a highly capable and technically strong Engineering Technical Manager to support the delivery of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Australia. This role will act as a key technical interface between Trina's local project delivery team, customers, EPC contractors, consultants, subcontractors, OEM suppliers, SCADA and EMS vendors, and Trina's global product, engineering, and R&D; teams. The role will provide technical leadership across project engineering, system integration, SCADA and communications, commissioning support, grid compliance coordination, and issue resolution throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities
n
Engineering Technical Leadership and Project Support
n
n
- Act as the main technical support lead within the project delivery team for utility-scale BESS projects.
n
- Provide engineering coordination and technical leadership across design review, procurement support, construction, commissioning, testing, and handover phases.
n
- Support the Project Manager in managing technical risks, engineering interfaces, design issues, project actions, and technical deliverables.
n
- Lead technical discussions with customers, EPC contractors, consultants, vendors, subcontractors, and internal engineering teams.
n
- Review and coordinate project engineering deliverables to ensure alignment with contract requirements, customer specifications, grid connection requirements, and Trina's product capability.
n
- Identify technical risks and interface gaps early, elevate key issues where required, and drive practical solutions with relevant stakeholders.
n
- Support decision-making on technical matters by providing clear analysis, recommendations, and coordination between local and global teams.
n
- Ensure technical issues are properly tracked, assigned, followed up, and closed in line with project priorities.
n
- Lead or support the integration of utility-scale BESS systems, including Battery Systems, PCS, EMS, PPC, SCADA, Gateway RTU, protection systems, meters, auxiliary systems, and external control interfaces.
n
- Manage technical interfaces between BESS subsystems and external stakeholders, including customers, EPC contractors, NSPs, AEMO-related parties, market operators, SCADA providers, and third-party control system providers.
n
- Review and interpret Single Line Diagrams, Interface Control Documents, communication architecture drawings, control logic diagrams, protection schemes, signal lists, and point mapping schedules.
n
- Coordinate internal R&D; teams, OEM suppliers, EMS providers, SCADA vendors, PPC suppliers, and site teams to ensure successful system integration.
n
- Support firmware, software, control logic, communication protocol,
and system interface integration across multiple vendors and platforms.
n
- Lead technical follow-up on interface issues involving EMS, PPC, SCADA, PCS, BMS, Gateway RTU, meters, protection relays, and auxiliary systems.
n
- Ensure interface responsibilities, technical boundaries, data exchange requirements, and control responsibilities are clearly understood and managed.
n
n
SCADA, Communications and Control System Integration
n
n
- Provide technical leadership and coordination for SCADA, communications, and control system integration activities.
n
- Review SCADA system architecture, communication network design, signal mapping, data exchange requirements, and control system interfaces.
n
- Coordinate the configuration, validation, and troubleshooting of industrial communication protocols, including: Modbus TCP/IP / Modbus RTU / DNP3 / IEC 61850 /OPC UA
n
- Other project-specific communication protocols where applicable
n
- Support Gateway RTU integration, signal mapping, data validation, remote monitoring, remote control, and alarm reporting functions.
n
- Coordinate the verification of communication quality, time synchronization, heartbeat functionality, communication failover logic, data integrity, and event reporting.
n
- Investigate and resolve communication and control interface issues between site equipment, SCADA, EMS, PPC, Gateway RTU, and external systems.
n
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure SCADA and communication deliverables are properly reviewed, tested, and closed.
n
n
System Commissioning, Testing and Issue Resolution
n
n
- Lead or support Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing, commissioning, energisation support, operational readiness testing, and project handover activities.
n
- Coordinate testing and validation of communications between EMS, PPC, SCADA, PCS, BMS, Gateway RTU, meters, protection relays, and external systems.
n
- Support commissioning activities associated with: AGC / FCAS and PFR functionality / Ramp rate control / Active power control / Reactive power control / Voltage regulation / Voltage droop functions / Availability signals / Dispatch target processing / Remote monitoring and control
n
- Lead or support troubleshooting and root cause analysis of integration issues involving controls, communications, system performance, SCADA data, alarms, dispatch interfaces, and plant operation.
n
- Coordinate issue resolution between site teams, vendors, subcontractors, product teams,
R&D; teams, and customers.
n
- Support capacity testing, performance testing, reliability testing, operational validation, and handover of BESS assets.
n
- Ensure commissioning issues, defect registers, punch list items, and technical actions are properly tracked and followed through to closure.
n
n
Grid Compliance and Market Integration Support
n
n
- Support Generator Registration activities and grid compliance requirements associated with AEMO, NSPs, customers, consultants, and other relevant stakeholders.
n
- Assist with the preparation, review, and coordination of documentation required for R1/R2 hold point testing, grid compliance assessments, and operational approvals.
n
n
Engineering Documentation and Quality Management
n
n
- Review, coordinate, and maintain key engineering and technical documentation.
n
n
Team Coordination and Management Capability
n
n
- Provide technical guidance to project engineers, site engineers, commissioning support resources, and external technical partners where required.
n
- Coordinate engineering workstreams and ensure technical tasks are clearly assigned, followed up, and completed.
n
n
Qualifications and Skills
n
n
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Control Systems, Renewable Energy, Mechatronics, Automation, Telecommunications, or related discipline.
n
- Relevant experience in renewable energy, utility-scale BESS, SCADA/EMS integration, commissioning, power system projects, industrial automation, or grid-connected infrastructure projects.
n
- Strong understanding of utility-scale BESS architecture and key subsystems.
n
- Solid understanding of SCADA, industrial communications, control system interfaces, and system integration principles.
n
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, DNP3, IEC 61850, OPC UA, or similar.
n
- Ability to review and interpret technical drawings, SLDs, communication architecture diagrams, ICDs, point lists, control logic diagrams, test procedures, and commissioning documents.
n
- Experience coordinating multiple technical stakeholders, including vendors, subcontractors, customers, consultants, and internal engineering teams.
n
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving capability.
n
- Strong technical communication, documentation, coordination, and stakeholder management skills.
n
- Ability to manage technical priorities, coordinate workstreams, and drive closure of engineering actions.
n
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Mandarin to liaise with Chinese counterparties.
n
- Ability to work effectively in a hybrid working setting and collaborate with local and international teams.
