Agriculture Science & Technology (AST) is seeking to recruit a Research Scientist to contribute to the development of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs for horticultural pests. Working under the guidance of the Senior Research Scientist – Applied Entomology & Integrated Pest Management, Mildura, the position will undertake innovative research towards the development, evaluation and implementation of IPM tools and practices in different horticultural crops.

The broad scope for this position includes supporting the development of AST's IPM research capability: pheromone trapping and monitoring insect pests in almond orchards, with a particular focus on Carpophilus truncatus; field and laboratory research on pest ecology, assessment of crop damage; pest management (biopesticides, biological control and crop hygiene); insect diagnostics; and, close liaison with industry. The position requires a methodical approach to scientific research, attention to detail, innovative thinking, entomological skills, experience in undertaking field trials, experience in stakeholder and industry engagement, and good inter-personal and written communication skills. This role is supported by a multi-year collaborative project involving the almond industry and government researchers in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia and two commercialisation projects for insect lures across different horticultural crops.

The successful applicant will work effectively as a member of the Invertebrate & Weed Sciences Team, a multidisciplinary team of scientists within AST. The position is based at AST's well-established laboratory and office complex at the Mildura SmartFarm,
where the successful applicant will enjoy versatile working arrangements and undertake a wide variety of work across the division.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
n
n
- A relevant PhD in Science, Biological Science or Agricultural Science is required, with a PhD in the field of Agricultural Entomology being an advantage.
n
- Proven experience with scientific field-based research projects in a research capacity, including experimental design, data collection, analysis and reporting. A strong background in statistical analysis and running large-scale field trials would be an advantage.
n
- A good understanding of insect ecology and knowledge of invertebrate pest management research in horticulture generally. Experience with almond pests would be an advantage.
n
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team conducting research. Ability to collaborate, share information with team members and work well with others in pursuit of team goals.
n
- Well-developed communication skills, with the ability to prepare quality reports, briefs, letters and emails using clear, concise language. Ability to present at conferences, workshops and professional meetings in a clear and interesting way for diverse audiences. Authored or co-authored publications including peer-reviewed journals, conference papers and reports. Primary authorship of research papers being an advantage. Experience with industry extension also an advantage.

- Demonstrated experience in stakeholder management skills,
ability to build effective working relationships by constructively dealing with stakeholder issues in a timely manner.

- Holds a valid Australian driving licence.

This is a fixed term position available until 30 June 2028. The work location for this position is Irymple.
