Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist | Melbourne, VIC
Join and help grow our Internal Medicine service - Ringwood, Melbourne
Great medicine is our starting point, not our point of difference — every specialist delivers it. What sets MASH apart is the service around it: we explain the reasoning behind every recommendation and invite the conversation, we tell owners plainly about prognosis and cost, and we never judge the decision an owner makes. We turn ourselves inside-out to make their hard day easier. Our value is the empathy, the quality of our care and our communication wrapped around the medicine — that's what earns owners' trust and keeps them with us. If that's the medicine you want to practise — great science, delivered with honesty and genuine owner partnership — you'll be right at home here.
We are looking for a Small Animal Internal Medicine specialist to join our established and growing Internal Medicine service. You would be joining our Head of Internal Medicine, Dr Alison Stickney (DACVIM), as our second internist, with real scope to help shape and grow the service as it expands.
Our goal is a close, collaborative medicine team that supports our referring vets and our other in-house departments. We would welcome a part-time specialist (three days per week) or full-time (four days per week). The roster is built with deliberate crossover with Alison, so there is regular time to consult, share cases and support one another — and on the days you are the only internist rostered, the wider specialist team and our medicine nurses are still around you. You run your own caseload independently, but never in isolation.
About MASH
Melbourne Animal Specialist Hospital (MASH) is a privately owned, patient-focused and fully independent referral hospital in Ringwood. Since opening, we have grown into a premier referral provider with a fantastic team of specialists and emergency clinicians, nurses and support staff — currently including specialists in internal medicine, small animal surgery, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia, and emergency and critical care.
We have a purpose-built fit-out with all the tools and equipment expected of a specialist hospital: on-site CT,
digital radiology, a separate ultrasound suite, a medicine procedure room, and separate cat and dog wards. Additional equipment includes fluoroscopy, rigid and flexible endoscopy, a full in-house IDEXX suite and a radiometer.
The team around you
Internal Medicine at MASH is supported by its own dedicated nursing team that works under the direction of the medicine specialists, so your caseload runs smoothly and efficiently. Our Head of Department, Dr Alison Stickney, is a very experienced internist with a genuine interest in supporting and developing the team around her. She is an experienced examiner at specialist level, and also has research experience with ongoing involvement in clinical research projects.
You will also work alongside a genuinely multidisciplinary specialist team. We have a Diagnostic Imaging specialist, Dr Natalie Webster (DipECVDI), for imaging support. You are always welcome to ultrasound your own cases, or to hand imaging over to Natalie to free you up to see the rest of your caseload. Having a specialist imager on hand for in-the-moment verbal reports on CT and radiographs also keeps cases moving rapidly, without waiting for external specialist reports.
Our Emergency and Critical Care specialist, Dr Merrin Hicks (FANZCVS), works closely with medicine on critical cases. Our surgeons are also available to assist with biopsies, oncologic surgery and other procedures as needed.
The role
- Work as our second Internal Medicine specialist alongside Dr Alison Stickney, Head of Internal Medicine.
- Help provide specialist medicine coverage across the working week, with overlap for collaboration.
- Part-time (three days per week) or full-time (four days per week) — we are happy to discuss the arrangement that suits the right person.
- Manage your own caseload autonomously, while collaborating closely as part of the medicine team.
- Contribute to shaping and growing the Internal Medicine service as it expands.
What we're looking for
- Specialist qualification in Small Animal Internal Medicine, registrable as a specialist in Australia. Residency-trained, board-eligible candidates will also be considered.
- Confidence to work autonomously and manage your own caseload.
- A collaborative, team-oriented approach and a desire to help build something.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary specialist team.
What we offer
- A market-competitive salary in the range of $220,000–$260,000 plus superannuation, commensurate with experience.
- Genuine flexibility — part-time or full-time — to support a sustainable career.
- A dedicated medicine nursing team, so your nurses are focused on your cases.
- A genuinely multidisciplinary team, including a Diagnostic Imaging specialist and a Critical Care specialist who collaborate closely with medicine.
- A supportive and collaborative team of specialists, with mentorship and collegial support from an experienced Head of Department.
- Opportunity and support to develop special interests, including niche clinical services, clinical research or development of leadership and/or teaching skills.
- State-of-the‑art facilities and equipment.
- Strong support for continuing education, including a CPD allowance and conference leave.
- A comprehensive Employee Assistance Program and a workplace that genuinely values a healthy team culture.
