Bring data to life for better decisions and shape a modern data platform for a connected, insight-led Council
About the role
This role goes far beyond building reports and dashboards. You will take ownership from understanding business requirements through data modelling, solution design, development, deployment and ongoing improvement, delivering data solutions that create real value for Council and the community.
You will have the opportunity to help shape and build a modern data platform using Microsoft Fabric and Power BI. This is a unique chance to influence the future direction of Council's analytics capability while working with up-to-date cloud-based technologies and best practices
This is a role for someone who enjoys the full lifecycle of data delivery: understanding requirements, shaping the solution, modelling the data, developing dashboards, deploying fit-for-purpose reporting products and continuously improving them over time.
What you'll be doing
- Design, build and improve Power BI dashboards, reports and data visualisations that support evidence-based decision-making.
- Use SQL to extract, transform, validate and analyse data from a range of business systems.
- Develop robust data models and reporting structures that are accurate, scalable and easy to use.
- Work independently with stakeholders to clarify business needs, identify the real problem to be solved, and recommend practical data solutions.
- Contribute to the development of Banyule’s data platform using Microsoft Fabric and best-practice analytics approaches.
- Translate complex data into explicit insights, recommendations and stories that non-technical audiences can understand and act on.
- Support better data governance, quality, documentation and continuous improvement across Council’s reporting and analytics environment.
About you and what we are looking for
You will bring strong technical skills in Power BI, SQL, Microsoft Fabric and data modelling, together with the curiosity and communication skills needed to work well with stakeholders. You are comfortable asking thoughtful questions, challenging assumptions and looking beyond the initial reporting request to understand what the business area is really trying to achieve.
We are looking for someone who can work with a good degree of independence, manage competing priorities,
and deliver high-quality data products that are trusted, sustainable and genuinely helpful. You’ll have:
- Tertiary qualification in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Statistics or a relevant discipline, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing dashboards and reports using modern business intelligence platforms, including strong data modelling and SQL skills.
- Practical experience with Microsoft Fabric or similar modern data platform tools.
- Demonstrated ability to engage stakeholders, understand business needs, and translate them into forward-thinking, strategic data solutions rather than reactive outputs.
- Sound understanding of data governance, data quality and data security principles as applied to reporting and analytics assets.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and communicate insights clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated experience building and maintaining effective working relationships across diverse business areas.
- Experience working in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment, with local government experience considered an advantage.
Pre-employment requirements
- Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check
What we offer
- A permanent full-time opportunity with a monthly RDO and generous leave entitlements
- Salary from $113,252.44 to $126,351.47 (dependent on experience) per annum plus super
- Opportunities for your growth and development, including health and well‑being initiatives
- Greensborough office location, close to public transport and the town centre
- Access a range of flexible work options to support work-life balance, including hybrid working
- Generous leave entitlements, including: 26 weeks paid parental leave (primary carer), 4 weeks paid parental leave (partner), gender affirmation leave, and gendered health leave
