About CSIRO
As Australia's national science agency, CSIRO is solving the greatest challenges through creative science and technology. Many of our iconic innovations were once considered impossible until someone, just like you, joined us and took on the challenge.
Are you a clinician who is passionate about improving healthcare beyond the bedside, clinic or ward?
CSIRO's Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC) is seeking a Clinical Information Modeller/Informatician to join the Sparked AU FHIR Accelerator team and help shape Australia's future health data standards. Drawing on your clinical knowledge and experience, you will work alongside healthcare professionals, researchers, vendors and other stakeholders to design and govern the clinical information models, terminologies and interoperability standards that support the exchange of health information across the Australian healthcare system.
This is a unique opportunity for experienced doctors and nurses with strong Australian healthcare experience to apply their understanding of clinical workflows, documentation practices and information exchange challenges in a new way. Rather than delivering patient care directly,
you'll help ensure health information can move consistently and safely between healthcare settings, supporting initiatives such as My Health Record, digital health solutions and national interoperability programs.
Working within Australia's largest digital health research program, you'll collaborate with other clinicians and industry experts across areas such as chronic condition management, child health and aged care, contributing to nationally significant work that supports better connected healthcare for all Australians.
Your high-level duties will include:
- Developing and governing structured clinical data models, comprising clinical information models and appropriate terminology value sets, to ensure alignment with current Australian clinical practice.
- Supporting the development of clinical terminology to achieve high-quality data and interoperability among diverse health information systems.
- Supporting the development of clinical use cases, workflows and clinical test data.
- Providing clinical expertise regarding aged, disability and primary health care.
- Participating in and facilitating the Sparked Clinical Design Group (CDG) and Sparked Clinical Focus Groups (CFGs), to co-design work with the clinical profession and industry through an agile approach.
- Where necessary, participating in the Sparked FHIR Projects, to clarify clinical requirements during the FHIR IG development process.
- Facilitating workshops with clinicians and vendors,
including pre- and post-workshop documentation.
Location and office arrangements: Brisbane, QLD preferred; other major CSIRO sites in Sydney, (NSW), Canberra (ACT), Melbourne (VIC) or Perth (WA) will also be considered
Salary: AU$135k – AU$158k per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation
Tenure & work schedule: Specified term of 2 years; full time; options for part-time work can be discussed based on needs of the role and individual circumstances.

As the successful candidate, you will bring:
- Tertiary qualifications in Medicine and/or Nursing, with demonstrated clinical practice experience in the Australian primary health care domain.
- An understanding of clinical healthcare practices, workflows, and regulatory requirements related to clinical documentation and health data exchange in Australia.
- The ability to engage stakeholders through negotiation, consultation and facilitation, supported by strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to apply these in complex project environments.
- An understanding of medical terminology, including anatomical terms, procedures, diagnoses, and medications.
- An understanding of the Sparked and Clinical Design Group (CDG) community collaborative approach.
Candidates who can also demonstrate one or more of the following will be highly regarded:
- Clinical work experience in the Australian aged care, disability or child health sectors
- Experience with openEHR clinical modelling methodology and FHIR standards.
- Proficiency in healthcare terminology standards such as SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD-10, and CPT codes, including how these integrate with openEHR archetypes and FHIR resources.
- Experience in using and managing terminology services, tools and other clinical data ontologies.
