This full-time role is based in Hobart and offers:

- Salary from $83,232 to $101,907 + Super & Salary packaging benefits

- 35-hour work week & no billable hours

About TALS
n
TALS is a community-controlled organisation providing culturally safe, holistic legal services across criminal, family, child safety and family violence prevention matters.
n
Our lawyers work alongside Aboriginal Liaison Officers and support staff to help clients navigate legal issues while addressing broader challenges such as housing, health, family violence and community connection.
n
The Opportunity
n
Reporting to the Senior Lawyer, you will provide legal advice, casework and representation in family and child safety matters across southern Tasmania.
n
The role may be appointed at Level 1 or Level 2, depending on your experience.
n
Level 1 suits newly admitted or early-career lawyers looking to develop advocacy and family law experience with solid mentoring.
n
Level 2 suits lawyers with experience in family, parenting or child safety matters who can manage files more independently and support junior team members.
n
Key Responsibilities
n
n
- Conduct family and child safety casework
n
- Provide legal advice to vulnerable clients
n
- Appear in court and undertake advocacy work
n
- Prepare correspondence, advice and court documents
n
- Build relationships with Legal Aid, courts and community organisations
n
- Participate in community legal education and law reform projects
n
- Contribute to the after-hours roster supporting Aboriginal people in custody
n
n
About You
n
To be successful, you will need:
n
n
- Admission, or eligibility for admission, as a legal practitioner in Tasmania
n
- Current registration to work with vulnerable people
n
- Current National Police Check
n
- Experience, or strong interest, in family law, parenting and child safety matters
n
- Court advocacy experience, or willingness to develop these skills
n
- Strong written communication and file management skills
n
- Experience working with vulnerable or trauma-affected clients
n
- Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
n
- Resilience, empathy and professional boundaries
n
- A genuine commitment to social justice
n
n
You will also receive:

- 23 days annual leave (with 17.5% annual leave loading) + 15 days personal/carer's leave
n

Weekend on-call is generally shared across lawyers and may occur approximately once every three months, with weekday on-call around one to two times per month.
