Deadly Choices Program Officer

This position has been identified - it is an occupational requirement that this position be filled by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person as permitted and arguable under Section 25 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

About the role

As part of a small team, you will be responsible for the delivery of school and community-based health education, promotion and prevention activities, in line with the Regional Action Plan and the Deadly Choices Education Program Manuals.

Service delivers in partnership with the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health the Deadly Choices Program, which aims to promote healthy lifestyle choices and enhance health literacy to prevent chronic disease developing in this generation, and future generations, of young Indigenous Queenslanders and to stem the increasing demand for more expensive secondary and tertiary care.

Key responsibilities

- Conduct and support a range of health education, promotion and prevention activities across the Fraser Coast region including Deadly Choices Healthy Lifestyles Program, Smoke Free Futures Program, Good Quick Tukka Program, Traditional Games Program, Deliver Community Smoke Free Yarning Spaces, Community Days, Clinic Support Activities & supporting the delivery of local and regional events, and availability to occasionally work weekends and after hours and Galangoor Duwalami Primary Healthcare Service staff training workshops
- Promote GDPHCS services and refer participants for Aboriginal Health Checks, to other health programs and clinical advice for chronic diseases as appropriate
- Facilitation, instruction and role modelling of key health messages and Deadly Choices education program modules
- Distribute health information/program materials and support participants in making healthy lifestyle choices and understanding of risk factors
- Undertake the distribution of program surveys and their collection, and ensure appropriate records of all program activities are maintained




- Support GDPHCS clinic and program staff to build knowledge and capability
- Identify and strengthen internal referral pathways between services and programs, and continuous improvement opportunities
- Foster productive working relationships with other GDPHCS staff, local networks, government departments, other service providers and suppliers to promote the GDPHCS and remain abreast of emerging issues

About you

- Demonstrated understanding of the health, social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Current Blue Card (working with children and young people)
- Current CPR certificate
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Current C Class Drivers Licence (Qld)
- Mandatory Vaccinations: Hepatitis B, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Measles Mumps and Rubella, Varicella (Chicken Pox), COVID-19 – Double vaccinated, and Influenza
- Ability to travel across the designated region as required
- Demonstrated experience working in Healthy Lifestyle or similar Health or Community engagement/development programs is desirable
- Preparedness to undertake further VET Training including Cert IV in Fitness - Certificate II, III or IV in fitness would be highly regarded
- Demonstrated competence in use of technology and desktop applications: internet, word, spreadsheet and database packages
