Protect the health a growing city depends on
As our Environmental Health Officer, you'll be the specialist who keeps Launceston's food, water and public spaces safe. You'll inspect, investigate and enforce compliance with public health, food safety and environmental health legislation, working with businesses and the community to build understanding as much as compliance.
You'll bring sound judgement to complex investigations, provide specialist advice across Council, and step up when public health risks emerge, from food safety incidents to climate related health impacts. It's a role with real autonomy, where your expertise shapes decisions that protect the whole community.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Inspect, investigate and enforce compliance with public health, food safety and environmental health legislation
- Provide specialist expert advice to Council, external agencies and the community on complex environmental health matters
- Investigate complaints and complex cases, preparing reports, notices and evidence for court where required
- Support Council's emergency management and climate adaptation work as it relates to public and environmental health
- Build voluntary compliance through education, working with local businesses and the community
About You We are looking for someone who demonstrates, through behaviour, an alignment and an understanding of Our Values and has the following qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Bachelor of Health Science (Environmental Health), or equivalent qualification, with the ability to accept authorisations and delegations as an Environmental Health Officer
- Demonstrated experience assessing food businesses, environmental nuisances and on-site wastewater treatment systems, and applying public health and environmental legislation in practice
- Strong investigative and problem solving skills, with sound judgement to make and communicate decisions in a regulatory setting
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work autonomously and build productive relationships across our community
- A current Class C driver's licence, and eligibility for Working with Vulnerable People registration
