Broadsheet Media

Melbourne

Broadsheet Media is looking for a Growth and Conversion Editor to join our editorial team full time.

This is a hands-on editorial role focused on creating the kind of useful, distinctive journalism that gives readers a clear reason to subscribe to Broadsheet. Sitting across Editorial, Reader Revenue and Analytics, you will produce a steady stream of high-value content focused primarily on Melbourne and Sydney’s food and drink scenes.

The role is less about chasing the biggest possible audience and more about understanding what our most engaged readers genuinely value. You will create decision-led guides, insider deep-dives, expert roundups and service features that help readers answer a simple question: where should I go, and why is this worth my time?

You will also use audience and conversion data to understand which subjects, formats and approaches lead readers to subscribe and stay subscribed, then turn those insights into better editorial.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Reader Revenue, with a dotted line to the Global Editorial Director, the Growth and Conversion Editor works closely with Broadsheet’s Reader Revenue, Audience, Product, Design and wider Editorial teams.

You will identify, report, write and publish original stories, while developing repeatable editorial formats that can become valuable parts of Broadsheet’s subscriber offering.

A key part of the role is thinking about content through a newsletter-first lens. You will work closely with the Newsletter Editor, Head of CRM and Head of Audience to make sure our strongest conversion-focused journalism reaches highly engaged readers in the right way.

You will also help manage Broadsheet’s growing portfolio of subscriber-only newsletters.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial and content production

- Write a consistent flow of sharp, engaging features, interviews, expert roundups and service journalism focused primarily on Melbourne and Sydney.
- Develop repeatable editorial formats, including chef-curated lists, occasion-led guides and neighbourhood-specific roundups.
- Manage and regularly refresh evergreen guides so they remain timely, useful and valuable to subscribers.
- Identify solid leads for original features, profiles and events within the role’s remit.
- Apply a clear editorial test to ideas: does this give the reader the confidence to make a great local decision now, and does it offer a recommendation they cannot easily get elsewhere?
- Upload and format stories, checking links, imagery, photography and presentation.
- Commission original photography and source suitable third-party imagery where required.

- Ensure all work meets Broadsheet’s editorial standards for accuracy, tone and style.
- Stay closely informed about Australian culture, hospitality and the stories shaping our cities.
- Manage multiple rolling deadlines while maintaining editorial quality.

Newsletter and subscriber content

- Develop and package conversion focused stories with a newsletter-first approach.
- Work closely with the Newsletter Editor to give high-value stories appropriate prominence.
- Collaborate with the Head of CRM and Head of Audience on sending dedicated content showcasing Broadsheet journalism that drives engagement and subscriptions.
- Project manage the production and distribution of Broadsheet’s growing subscriber-only newsletter portfolio.

Audience and performance

- Use analytics dashboards to understand reader behaviour, identify patterns and turn those insights into practical editorial decisions.
- Work closely with Reader Revenue, Product, Audience and Editorial to understand which topics and formats contribute to paid subscriptions.
- Participate in editorial news conferences and insights sessions, bringing performance learnings back into the content pipeline.
- Use data as an editorial tool, without losing sight of Broadsheet’s standards, taste and point of view.

About You You are an experienced digital editor and writer who understands how to make practical journalism feel distinctive rather than transactional. You have strong knowledge of Melbourne and Sydney’s hospitality and cultural landscapes, along with the editorial judgement to know what is genuinely worth a reader’s attention.

You are comfortable working with audience data and understand how subscriptions, paywalls and digital conversion work. You can look at performance information, identify what matters and translate it into better ideas rather than simply chasing traffic.

You Will Also Bring

- Strong digital writing, editing and proofreading skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
- A deep understanding of Broadsheet’s tone, standards and approach to cultural coverage.
- Robust knowledge of Melbourne and Sydney’s food, drink and broader cultural scenes.
- An understanding of reader revenue models,

digital conversion funnels and paywall dynamics.
- The ability to write sharp, effective newsletter copy and package editorial for subscriber audiences.
- Confidence using content management systems and analytics platforms.
- Excellent organisation and time management, with the ability to manage multiple daily deadlines.
- A proactive, thoughtful approach to turning performance insights into original editorial ideas.
- Strong judgement about where to focus effort, including the confidence to prioritise valuable subscriber journalism over high-volume traffic opportunities.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to build strong working relationships across Editorial, Product, Audience and Reader Revenue.
