The role
As Head of Enterprise Risk - Operations, you will lead and enhance risk and compliance management across APRA's Operations divisions, including Data, Technology and Security (DTS). Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of risk and compliance professionals, providing practical risk advice, support and constructive challenge to help APRA's divisions make well-informed decisions and manage their risks effectively.
This is a senior leadership role that combines enterprise risk expertise, compliance oversight, stakeholder engagement, people leadership and pragmatic delivery. You will build trusted relationships across the organisation, provide transparent and constructive challenge, and support stronger risk ownership and accountability, helping APRA strengthen its risk and compliance capability.
The team The Enterprise Risk team is responsible for maintaining and operationalising APRA's risk and compliance management frameworks, providing a holistic view of APRA's risk profile and contributing to the embedding of the desired risk behaviours and culture.
The management of risks is everyone's responsibility, and the role of the Enterprise Risk team is to ensure that each of APRA's Division and staff has the information, tools, and knowledge necessary to effectively manage their risks.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of four risk and compliance professionals, building capability and supporting the delivery of practical, timely and constructive advice and challenge;
- Lead risk partnering for APRA's Operations divisions, assisting senior leaders to identify, assess and manage material risks across business operations, technology, data, security, resilience,
third-party arrangements and change initiatives;
- Lead compliance management support across divisions, including obligations management, compliance monitoring, reporting, and practical advice to support effective risk ownership and achieve proportionate compliance outcomes;
- Provide independent Line 2 advice and constructive challenge on material decisions, initiatives and risk acceptances, while retaining accountability for forming a clear risk-based view;
- Provide expertise across enterprise risk management activities, including key project oversight, risk monitoring, risk reporting, framework development and maintenance, and thematic issue and incident management; and
- Use data, insights and stakeholder intelligence to identify emerging themes, support prioritisation and drive practical improvements in risk management and compliance practices.
About you
- Extensive enterprise or operational risk experience, with the ability to deliver practical, risk-based Line 2 advice and constructive challenge within a complex organisational environment;
- Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to set direction, empower others and foster an inclusive team environment;
- Broad practical risk and compliance experience across areas such as frameworks, obligations management, monitoring, reporting, and risk advice;
- Meaningful exposure to DTS-related risks, including technology, data, security, resilience, third-party and major change risks, with the ability to engage credibly with technical experts;
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide advice and reporting to internal and external stakeholders, including Boards;
- Strong relationship-building, negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and influence at senior levels; and
- Demonstrated ability to use data, reporting, assurance insights, incidents and issues to identify trends, support prioritisation, and drive practical improvements in risk and compliance management.
