Bring your knowledge, experience and community perspective to the ethical review of research involving First Nations peoples, cultures, knowledge, lands and waters.
### About Charles Darwin University
Research is a major strength of Charles Darwin University (CDU). We are committed to conducting responsible, ethical research that benefits the Northern Territory’s people, animals and Country.
CDU’s Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) reviews research involving or concerning people. Its membership brings together university staff and community members with diverse knowledge, experience and perspectives.
### The chance
CDU is inviting First Nation peoples to join the HREC First Nations Subcommittee as external members.
CDU defines First Nations research as research that relates to, or may affect, the collective rights and interests of First Nations peoples, including their lands, waters, cultures and histories.
As a member of the subcommittee, you will help review research involving First Nations participants, data or knowledge. Your contribution will help ensure that research is culturally informed, ethically appropriate and respectful of First Nations peoples and communities.
### Your contribution
As a First Nations Subcommittee Member, you will:
- consider the ethical implications of proposed research involving First Nations participants, data or knowledge
- provide guidance and advice on research relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- consider whether researchers have appropriate experience and qualifications, and whether students will be suitably supervised
- assess research against relevant ethical standards, including the AIATSIS Code of Ethics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research
- consider whether proposed research meets CDU’s guidelines for reviewing and supporting First Nations research
- contribute your views during subcommittee discussions
- report the outcomes of proposal reviews to the Human Research Ethics Committee.
### About you

- willing to express your views in a committee environment
- able to guide and advise on the ethical review of research relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples
- interested in supporting culturally appropriate and ethical research
- available to attend flexibly scheduled subcommittee meetings
- able to complete up to three hours of reading and preparation before each meeting.
Previous experience on a research ethics committee is not required.
### Time commitment The First Nations Subcommittee meets seven times each year, approximately every six weeks.
Meetings are held 5–10 days before scheduled HREC meetings. Meeting days and times can be arranged flexibly, and the duration will depend on the number and complexity of First Nations research proposals being reviewed.
Members should allow up to six hours for reading and preparation before each meeting.
Meetings may be attended at CDU’s Casuarina campus or online via Zoom.
### Payment
External First Nations Subcommittee members receive $200 per meeting when they attend and contribute to the review of research proposals.
This payment applies to external members only. CDU employees participating as internal members are not eligible for payment because their participation forms part of their university employment.
### What you’ll gain
This role provides an opportunity to:
- contribute to culturally respectful and ethical research
- help protect the rights and interests of First Nations peoples and communities
- bring First Nations perspectives to research decision-making
