We're looking for an experienced Landscape Architect to join the City Design Team in our dynamic Place Branch and help shape the future of one of Australia's most liveable and rapidly evolving regional cities.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to strategic planning, development assessment, public realm outcomes, and landscape policy initiatives that will have a lasting impact across the Toowoomba Region.
Why This Role Matters
As our Landscape Architect, you'll play a pivotal role in influencing how our streets, parks, open spaces and urban environments evolve.
From assessing major development proposals to shaping landscape strategies and planning policy, you'll provide expert guidance that enhances the environmental, social and visual quality of our region's places and spaces.
You'll work alongside planners, urban designers, architects, environmental specialists and engineers in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team that is passionate about creating places people love.
The Opportunity In this role, you will:
- Provide specialist landscape architecture and landscape planning advice across Council and the development industry.
- Assess landscape elements of development applications and prepare recommendations and approval conditions.
- Develop and implement landscape planning strategies, policies, codes and planning provisions.
- Review landscape and open space designs to ensure high-quality development outcomes.
- Undertake landscape inspections and provide guidance on compliance matters.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support the delivery of street trees and open space infrastructure.
- Prepare landscape architecture documentation and design advice for internal projects.
- Represent Council in stakeholder meetings, industry discussions, working groups and community forums.
- Contribute to reports, strategic initiatives and projects that influence the future character and identity of the region.
About You
You are a passionate and experienced Landscape Architect who understands the important role landscape plays in creating connected, sustainable and memorable places.
You combine strong technical expertise with strategic thinking and enjoy working with a diverse range of stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes.
You'll bring
Essential Qualifications &
Experience
- Degree qualification in Landscape Architecture (or equivalent recognised qualification).
- Significant experience in landscape architecture and landscape planning, ideally within local government or a planning and development environment.
- Eligibility for membership with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) and affiliate membership with the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).
- Current Class C Driver Licence.
What Will Set You Apart
- Strong understanding of planning and development legislation and landscape compliance requirements.
- Experience preparing or reviewing landscape strategies, policies and planning provisions.
- Ability to assess complex development applications and provide practical, evidence-based recommendations.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present ideas both visually and verbally.
- Experience using or the ability to quickly learn software such as AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Bluebeam and Pathway.
- A collaborative approach and a genuine passion for creating exceptional place-based outcomes.
