About the Role
n
Our Federal Government client is seeking a Business Intelligence (BI) Developer (IBM Cognos and Microsoft Power BI) to play a key role in maintaining, modernising, and supporting business intelligence solutions within BAU/Operations environment.
n
The BI Developer will design, develop, and optimise reports and dashboards using IBM Cognos and Microsoft Power BI, ensuring high performance, reliability, and usability. A major focus of this role will be supporting the migration from Cognos to Power BI, ensuring seamless transition of reporting artefacts, maintaining data integrity, and improving visualisation standards.
n
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with architects, analysts, and business users to deliver insights that support policy, compliance, and program outcomes.
n
Key Duties and Responsibilities
n
n
- Design, develop, and maintain BI reports, dashboards, and data models in Cognos and Power BI.
n
- Support and execute migration activities from Cognos to Power BI, including redesign of reports, validation, and testing.
n
- Work closely with the Operations teams to understand reporting requirements and translate them into scalable BI solutions.
n
- Optimise report performance, data queries, and refresh processes to ensure timely and accurate insights.
n
- Contribute to the development of standardised reporting templates and data governance practices.
n
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior developers on BI best practices.
n
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Data Modellers, ETL Developers, and Solution Architects.
n
- Ensure all solutions comply with departmental data governance, security, and accessibility standards.
n

Technical Skills
n
n
- Proficiency in IBM Cognos (Framework Manager, Transformer, Report Studio, Analytics).
n
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Power BI, including DAX, Power Query, Dataflows, and Workspaces.
n
- Experience in report migration from Cognos to Power BI.
n
- Strong SQL and data modelling capabilities within enterprise data warehouse environments.
n
- Familiarity with Qlik Sense.
n
- Experience integrating BI tools with data sources such as Teradata, Oracle, and GCP.
n
- Understanding of Agile & DevOps practices.
n
n
Essential Criteria
n
n
- Demonstrated experience (5+ years) in BI development using both Cognos and Power BI within an enterprise data warehouse environment.
n
- Proven experience in migrating BI artefacts and reports from Cognos to Power BI.
n
- Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and optimise complex data models, reports, and dashboards.
n
- Experience working in Agile, cross-functional data teams delivering to business and technical stakeholders.
n
- Solid analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate requirements into scalable BI solutions.
n
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage technical and non-technical audiences effectively.
n

Desirable Criteria
n
n
- Experience with Qlik Sense and other contemporary BI visualisation tools.
n
- Understanding of data governance frameworks and metadata management.
n
- Familiarity with data systems (e.g., Siebel, Salesforce, Services Australia).
n
- Certifications in Power BI, Cognos, or Data Analytics.
n
- Experience contributing to BI strategy or roadmaps in a large government or enterprise environment.
