Graduate Program Overview The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) graduate program provides you with valuable experience in the energy sector, building your skills and knowledge for your future legal career and providing an opportunity for career progression. The program delivers a pathway for you to be part of the AEMC’s team of Legal Counsels and contribute to delivering a decarbonised, affordable and reliable energy system for consumers.

As a Legal Graduate, you will participate in supporting policy development of the AEMC through the work of the legal team, engage with other organisations and work to improve the operation of the energy sector for the benefit of consumers. You will develop skills in legally reviewing amendments to the national energy rules and related policy documents, analytical thinking, stakeholder engagement and communication, with problem–solving and writing capability being critical success factors.

You will gain exposure to a variety of complex energy policy issues, work on multiple projects and contribute to reviews and rule changes by undertaking legal research and analysis, contributing to policy design, drafting changes to the national energy rules and related processes, and project management of legal workstreams.





Your responsibilities will increase over the course of the program as your skills, experience and confidence grows, so that by the end of the program you will apply your research, analytical and communication skills to manage parts of a major, complex project led by others and support the legal team in providing legal advice for policy recommendations and in implement regulatory change.

Responsibilities will also involve supporting the legal team in providing legal advice on the corporate governance and internal compliance processes of the AEMC. This includes reviewing policies and procedures, undertaking contract reviews and completing research and analysis on a range of areas of the law.

The projects you may be involved in include:

- Market reviews and advice: Contribute to strategic, long-term projects that aim to develop the market settings that will help the people of Australia benefit from lowest-cost, low emissions, reliable, secure and safe power.
- Rule changes: The National Electricity, Retail, and Gas Rules govern how energy markets operate. You may work with experienced staff on assessing rule change proposals and contributing to the development of rules that promote the safe, reliable and secure supply of energy.

About you

We are looking for a legal graduate who is passionate about the energy sector and who has:

- recently completed (or will shortly complete) tertiary qualifications in law




- robust problem-solving skills and can demonstrate judgement, flexibility and foresight
- a strong interest in developing their knowledge of energy regulations and markets and areas of the law relevant to practising as an in-house counsel (e.g. contract, privacy and corporate law).
- the ability to prioritise multiple deadlines
- the ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently to deliver work outcomes
- in depth research and analytical skills with a proven ability to understand complex subject matters quickly
- demonstrated strong writing skills to contribute to the development of legal advice, policy papers and reports
- an interest in working with diverse stakeholders and developing engagement skills including presenting information to diverse audiences
