Charters Paper is looking for a Day Shift Production Superintendent who will be responsible for leading, coordinating, and supporting the shift production. Reporting directly to the Head of Operations, this role provides leadership and support to Production Supervisors and manufacturing employees.
The role provides operational support and backup coverage for the Production Supervisor and Production Planners, coordinates contractor activities, site services, and maintenance requirements, and actively fills in as a Machine Operator when business needs require.
Key Responsibilities
Workforce Planning & Development
- Ensure effective communication and coordination between production, maintenance, warehousing.
- Drive multi-skilling and cross-training initiatives to increase team flexibility, capability, and operational resilience.
- Provide backup coverage for Supervisors, enabling them to focus on training, coaching, and developing employees through structured multi-skilling and cross-training programs.
- Identify skills gaps and training requirements within the manufacturing workforce.
- Ensure adequate labour coverage during annual leave, employee absences, and periods of increased workload.
- Act as backup for the Production Planner, including production scheduling, work prioritisation, and resource allocation.
Hands-On Manufacturing Support
- Operate manufacturing equipment and machinery as required to support production demands.
- Assist with machine setups, changeovers, troubleshooting, and operational improvements.
- Provide practical support to operators and Supervisors during peak periods and operational challenges.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of manufacturing processes, equipment capabilities, and production requirements.
Maintenance & Contractor Coordination
- Coordinate contractor and site service activities as scheduled.
- Ensure contractor works are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company requirements.
- Work closely with the Production Team to support equipment reliability and plant performance.
- Carry out the maintenance planning, and site improvement projects.
- Closely monitor critical machinery spare parts, follow up on inventory requirements, and ensure timely ordering within budget constraints.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety, environmental, HACCP, GMP, and quality management requirements.
- Maintain a solid safety-first culture throughout the operation.
- Conduct workplace inspections and participate in incident investigations as required.
- Support internal and external audits and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
Skills & Experience
- Trade qualifications in printing or mechanical fitting is preferred, with experience in manufacturing, print, packaging, or similar paper-based industries
- Experience within the paper, packaging, converting, printing, or manufacturing industries.
- Previous experience in a Production Superintendent, Production Supervisor, or similar leadership role.
- Strong hands-on manufacturing experience with the ability to operate production machinery.
- Experience in production planning, scheduling, and workforce coordination.
- Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and people management skills.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Competent computer skills including Microsoft Office and production systems.
- Knowledge of HACCP, GMP, quality systems, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Forklift licence and relevant manufacturing certifications.
