- Work Location: Participant homes, community settings and other approved service locations

Position Purpose

The Trainee Disability Support Worker provides routine, person-centred disability support while undertaking substantial on-the-job training and developing the skills and experience required for progression within the disability support industry.

The employee will work under direct, routine or general supervision, depending on the particular task, and will follow established participant support plans, workplace procedures, risk assessments and management instructions.

The role is designed for an employee who is developing their disability support skills and may have limited previous industry experience.

The primary purpose of the position is to assist participants with personal care, daily living activities, household tasks, community participation and other routine supports while promoting dignity, choice, safety and independence.

Key Responsibilities

Participant Support

The employee may:

- Provide routine support to NDIS participants in accordance with established support plans.
- Assist participants with everyday activities and routines.
- Provide companionship and social support.
- Assist participants to participate in community and recreational activities.
- Accompany participants to appointments, shopping and approved activities.
- Encourage participants to make choices and participate in decisions about their daily activities.
- Support participants to maintain independence wherever reasonably possible.
- Follow established routines and instructions provided by supervisors.
- Observe participant wellbeing and report concerns or changes to a supervisor.
- Seek assistance whenever a situation is outside established procedures, instructions or the employee's level of training.

Personal Care

Where required by the participant's support plan and where the employee has received appropriate training, duties may include:

- Assistance with showering and bathing.
- Personal hygiene assistance.
- Dressing and grooming.
- Toileting and continence assistance.
- Assistance with eating and drinking.
- Mobility assistance.
- Assistance with routine transfers where trained and authorised.
- General personal care and lifestyle support.

Personal care must be provided in accordance with established support plans, organisational procedures and training provided to the employee.

The employee is not authorised to independently alter a participant's care arrangements or undertake specialised or clinical activities outside their training and competence.

Domestic and Daily Living Support

Duties may include:

- General household cleaning.
- Food preparation and basic cooking.
- Grocery shopping.
- Maintaining clean and protected participant living areas.
- Assisting participants to participate in household tasks.
- Other routine domestic duties identified within the participant's support plan.

Community Access

The employee may:

- Accompany participants into the community.
- Assist participants to attend appointments.
- Support shopping and errands.
- Assist with recreational and social activities.




- Provide transport where authorised by the organisation.
- Support participants to access community facilities and services.
- Follow established community access plans and participant risk controls.

The employee must not independently change planned activities where doing so would introduce an unidentified or unmanaged participant risk.

Medication Support

Where medication support forms part of the employee's duties, the employee may only provide assistance where:

- The activity is authorised within the participant's support arrangements.
- The employee has completed required medication training.
- The employee has been assessed as competent where required.
- The activity falls within established organisational procedures.
- Appropriate medication documentation is available.

The employee must not independently make decisions concerning medication dosage, medication changes or clinical treatment.

Any medication error, refusal, omission or concern must be reported immediately in accordance with organisational procedures.

Documentation and Reporting

The employee is required to:

- Complete accurate progress notes following each shift.
- Record supports provided and relevant participant activities.
- Record significant observations concerning participant wellbeing.
- Complete required checklists and routine records.
- Report incidents promptly.
- Report hazards and safety concerns.
- Complete incident reports when required.
- Record medication-related information where applicable.
- Maintain participant confidentiality.
- Ensure documentation is factual, professional and completed within required timeframes.

Supervision and Level of Responsibility

This is an entry-level disability support position.

The employee:

- Works under close, direct, routine or general supervision as appropriate to the duties being performed.
- Performs clearly defined and routine activities.
- Works within established policies, procedures and instructions.
- Has ready access to supervision, instruction and assistance.
- Has limited freedom to act outside established procedures.
- May organise the timing of routine tasks within an allocated shift.
- Must seek guidance when an issue is not addressed by established procedures.
- Must not independently develop or alter participant support plans.
- Must not independently change behaviour support strategies.
- Must not make clinical decisions.
- Must not independently authorise restrictive practices.
- Does not supervise or manage other employees.
- Is expected to participate in substantial workplace training.

Training and Development

As a trainee employee, the worker is expected to:

- Participate actively in workplace training.
- Complete organisational induction.
- Complete mandatory NDIS training.
- Attend scheduled supervision and training sessions.
- Develop knowledge of organisational policies and procedures.
- Develop personal care and daily living support skills.
- Develop appropriate written and verbal communication skills.
- Learn how to complete progress notes and workplace records.
- Accept reasonable instruction and constructive feedback.
- Ask questions when uncertain.




- Demonstrate progressive improvement in workplace skills and knowledge.
- Complete any formal training or qualification requirements applicable to their traineeship.

The employer will provide substantial on-the-job and/or external training appropriate to the employee's duties and level of experience.

Participant Safety and Duty of Care

The employee must:

- Exercise appropriate duty of care at all times.
- Follow participant support plans and risk assessments.
- Follow workplace health and safety procedures.
- Identify and report hazards.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
- Follow emergency procedures.
- Immediately report participant injuries, incidents or significant changes in wellbeing.
- Immediately report suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, violence or discrimination.
- Never undertake duties they have not been appropriately trained or authorised to perform.
- Contact a supervisor when assistance or clarification is required.

NDIS Responsibilities

The employee must:

- Comply with the NDIS Code of Conduct.
- Respect participant dignity and privacy.
- Support participant choice and control.
- Treat participants fairly and respectfully.
- Protect confidential information.
- Follow Profound Care Australia Pty Ltd policies and procedures.
- Report incidents and complaints appropriately.
- Take reasonable steps to prevent and respond to violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.
- Only provide supports they are competent and authorised to provide.

Behaviour Support

Where a participant has an established behaviour support plan, the employee must:

- Read and understand the relevant instructions before providing support.
- Follow approved strategies exactly as directed.
- Report changes in behaviour or identified risks.
- Seek assistance when situations fall outside established procedures.
- Complete required documentation.

The employee is not authorised to independently develop behaviour support strategies or introduce restrictive practices.

Professional Conduct

The employee is expected to:

- Treat participants, families, colleagues and other stakeholders respectfully.
- Attend rostered shifts reliably and punctually.
- Notify management promptly regarding absence or inability to attend a shift.
- Maintain professional boundaries with participants.
- Communicate professionally.
- Follow lawful and reasonable directions.
- Maintain participant confidentiality.
- Use organisational and participant property responsibly.
- Maintain appropriate personal presentation and hygiene.
- Refrain from inappropriate use of personal mobile phones while supporting participants.
- Not attend work affected by alcohol, illegal drugs or any substance that makes the employee unsafe to work.
- Avoid inappropriate personal, financial or social relationships with participants.
- Declare potential conflicts of interest.

The employee must hold or obtain and maintain, where applicable:

- NDIS Worker Screening Check.
- Working with Children Check where required.
- Current First Aid Certificate.
- Current CPR certification.
- NDIS Worker Orientation Module completion.
- Current driver's licence where driving is required.
- Appropriate vehicle registration and insurance where a personal vehicle is used for work.
- Mandatory organisational training.
- Any participant-specific training required before providing particular supports.
